Common question, huh?

Has anyone here played around with both? I've been using / selling various cameras for a while now, but i've stuck with my Oly XA2 for quite some time. I'm keeping it, but i'd like to have my main camera as something with a little more control. I've previously own the Canonet QL17 and i loved it, but i was thinking of getting an Olympus 35 SP instead. Reason being the reputation of the lens - not that i didn't enjoy the QL17's results - and just the will to try something new.

I'm sort of leaning towards the SP simply because i've heard the lens is better, but if anyone has any points i wouldn't mind returning to the QL17 either.

(PS if anyone has a black model of either and wants to sell or trade me, ;) )

The lens on the 35 SP is IMHO way better than the Canonet. I had both. But the Canonet QL17 is more popular... so who knows?

I think since you're in the searching mode, get both and do your own tests, sell the one that you don't like. And please share your findings here :)

If I get a black Canonet, I'll sell it to you ;)

Haha well i'm pretty poor at the moment - i'm trying to sell a Nikon FE kit so i have some spare money to buy an SP. I liked the results i got from the Canonet but they weren't spectacular or anything - so if the SP is at the very least the same - but apparently better - i'll be happy with that.

I really like the Canonets, they seem easier find on the used market aswell.
But it's hard to go past the SP with its great lens and metering options which in my mind make it superior to the Canonet.
If you can somehow hold one and try it out before buying that'd be ideal. The ergonomics arent exactly perfect with the SP, that pretty much the only negative thing i could say about them.
Oh and yes i have a black one but you cant have it :p

I didn't really enjoy the ergonomics of the canonet too much to be honest - though i did like the little focussing knob.

Is the SP bigger or smaller in the hand?

Also, you should definitely give up that black SP :] haha.

This is how a 35 SP compared to a Leica M system.

As you can see, they are almost the same size. So those who think that the 35 SP is too big, must say the same thing also about an M body :D .
