So I had to order a bag to hold my burgeoning Oly collection. I'll be glad when this kit finally comes together.

If you go strictly by maximum aperture of each 50mm lens, that is a complete 50mm kit. Congratulations are in order, really. That's not something that is done quickly or without persistence.

I would like to see your opinion of which lens is best suited for which use. For one example, close-ups of plants: do you prefer the 50/3.5, 50/2, or maybe even the 50/1.2 on extension tubes?

For example, from my experience, the 55/1.2 has a very distracting out-of-focus area when taking pictures of subjects that are close-up, and have a "noisy" background in the distance. By "noisy" background I mean one that has lots of highlights and shadows mixed together, like sunlight through trees. My solution is to either eliminate the "noisy" background, or use a different lens. For other situations, the 55/1.2 is a great choice. I just don't have all of those situations worked out, yet, so would like to know others' opinions and experiences.
 
That OM1 is really sweet, I just got a OM1n in black with a working meter, I already have
two others, one chrome and one black that have none working meters.

Well, I don't have the 50/1.2 yet; I still have to wait for the mailman but you will notice that lens is no longer on KEH's site 😀

But the answer to your questions is the 50/2 macro.

I bought 50/1.2 because as I was quite literally trying my hardest to buy a hasselblad instead and it just wouldn't work. As in, the universe was sending me a sign or some **** wouldn't work.

Anyway when KEH got that 50/1.2 I thought the price was fair so I looked into it and it seemed like 50/1.2 has good rendering of texture like 50/2 and 50/3.5. I really dislike 50/1.4, 50/1.8 and 55/1.2 in this regard so I don't use them much. 55/1.2 gets some usage because it's weird and there is sometimes a place for that. If all I had were 50/1.4 and 50/1.8 to choose from, I would get a Contax 50/1.7 or Leica 60/2.8 or Zeiss 50/2.0 MP... oh wait I did. I still own the latter two and btw the Leica is my easy favorite out of every lens I own. Then it's 50MP and then OM50/2 and finally OM50/3.5. Everything else I only use when I feel guilty I own such lenses and dont use them.

When I get it I will test contrast with fine textures myself on tripod using my digital camera and self timer/MLU. Ill put it at f4 or 5.6 in diffuse light aimed at something with lots of texture, and it will sink or swim. If it fails to pass this very specific test, Ill return it and get something else. Maybe another rolleiflex, I really don't know.

Hi,

Hmmm, but that's collecting; the OM10, 50mm and T20 is a serious kit for taking excellent pictures; especially with the manual adapter. Perhaps just the 90mm and a 28mm to make a very serious outfit... (And perhaps the flash extender that raises it a few inches.)

I'll wish you luck with the OM-1, it took me ages to find one that was original. Meaning no MD badge etc, once checked over by the expert (Micheal Spencer) and fitted with a different screen for my poor old tired eyes it was a thing of beauty etc, etc.

The ones I collect are the ones I don't use, David. My gearheadedness comes from working with tools all my life, where one needs the right item to do the job. So I tend to kit out any camera platform that comes my way, sometimes to the detriment of having anything left over to buy film with.

I was given an OM-10 and G, and that's what got me started down this slippery slope. Once I found how good the lenses are, I just kept going. It didn't help that there are two different winders, the OM-1/2 use different flashes than the OM1n/2n, plus the myriad combinations of accessory shoes, connecting cords, flash brackets needed depending on which model body you have. And sometimes having to purchase a body along with a particular lens, even if I already have one. I'll probably lighten the load later on by jettisoning the excess gear. But for now I have to explore this new-to-me system I've been avoiding for 40 years.

This is all Keith's fault, you know.

I couldn't agree more, especially about tools. Alas, the burglars we had agreed and I've not bothered to replace them. Especially the 30's stuff I inherited which is just superior to any else you can name...

Nowadays, I try to stick to what I use in the camera line but strange things will keep appearing under my nose when I've a few pennies to jingle and spend. So I've serious cameras and fun ones to play with and - hardest of all - use.

BTW, the black OM2n with Winder -1 came in today, and other than being a bit dusty, is in really good shape. I still have to figure out what glue to use to get the mirror back in the OM-F.

I hear what you're saying, David. In my case, I took four truck loads of stuff (Mostly camera gear boxed up) down to the auction house a few years back, and it was almost like getting robbed.

I think that you might want to try a flexible contact cement for that mirror, Phil, maybe something silicone or hide-based. An epoxy might be to brittle and not shear-resistant enough. Maybe even thin strips of two-sided tape would work.

My OMF (not an OMG, as I previously stated) came in the mail today. And it seems like everything is working.

Hey, I saw that. Looks good. Have you tried the focusing aid yet? Believe me, it doesn't work in low light situations, which was part of the reason it never gained favor among the OMites.

with MC 28mm f2.8 and a MC 50mm f1.8. I been bitten by the film bug lately

My OM4 came in, and to my delight, I seem to have one with updated circuitry. To confirm, you set it to battery test, and if it turns itself off within a minute, it's the new, battery-saving, guts, correct?

I've always found the OM system one of the less confusing around. It's one of the main reasons I like the OM system so much. Sure there's a lot of accesories, but then so are there in other systems.

Just got my third OM-1 body in the other day. Maybe I should add an OM-2 to the set, but I just really like my OM-1 as it is...
Still debating if I want to add more lenses to the set; got the 24mm 2.8, 28mm 3.5, a couple 50mm 1.8's and a couple 135mm 3.5's.

Mostly I'm looking for a 35mm and maybe the 85mm. Is the 35mm 2.8 any good? I saw the thread about the f/2 version and the consensus seems to be the older version isn't worth getting while the newer version is better. I don't care for bokeh and DoF and the extra stop of light. Size, handling and results are much more important to me. Suggestions?
