I don't know if anyone else has heard, or if anyone else cares, but I am completely hanging out on the line about the olympus e-1 successor the E-3. It's been years and years since they updated or did anything to try to better the original e-1 which I've never owned but know is a fantastic camera in it's own right.

Well, apparently some of the bigger US photojournalists have been invited to the launch of the olympus E-3 on tuesday october 16th which is tomorrow. As the e-1 I think we can definetly expect the same sort of weather sealing (e-1 was pretty much water proof and dust proof), a big bright viewfinder and a newish, interesting sensor design. I've been following the developments and rumours for the last few months....

Apparently the new sensor is still in the 4/3rds format, but with a foveon sort of design to the layout. Rumour has it there will be large gains in DR and image depth.

I've been following this site:
http://www.olympus-esystem.com/dea/special/passion/index.html

- it's an olympus information publicity leak with interviews with the designers of the camera on it. Goes through all the details of design but mentions nothing of the sensor or anything yet - I suspect it will get to that part after being announced officially sometime this week.

here is a quick take from the last updated page about the shutter design. I dont know if people are the same as me, but I used to own a canon 350d/digital rebel and it had this horrible electronic sounding shutter, my 30d isn't much bettter.... very "clack" like sound which is messy and loud.
Have a read of this:

"We wanted to give an even higher-class feeling to the shutter sound of the E-1's successor, so we studied the shutter sounds carefully and analyzed the frequencies and sound pressure levels.
High accuracy is a matter of course for a camera that is the flagship.
Moreover, we also tried to improve the sensual quality, such as the nature, tone and reverberation of the sounds."
Look a little self-conscious, Mr. Iwase added "When the E-1's successor arrives in stores, we hope people will listen to how it sounds. We worried about it a lot, and we think we've come up with something that will make people feel good when they operate it."

That to me, is very very exciting.

Add to that the new lenses - especially the new 14-35mm f2 and some of the larger f2 telephoto zooms - with the famous zuiko quality and I'm ever so interested to have a play with the E-3.

*Please note I don't work for olympus or anything - I just like them and thought you guys might be interested in this.... Finding it hard to contain my excitement.

Yeah the OM lenses can be used however you have to multiply the focal length by 2 to get the effective focal length. The real plus is using olympus new small fast zooms I think... Hopefully they'll make new primes for it as well.

Yeah, but these zooms are big and many seem to have distortion all over the place.

From what I read, you have to use old OM lenses in stopdown mode, no automatic. Was I correct? For me, that's a deal breaker.

They haven't released the really good ones yet. Even the consumer zooms that come with the cheaper model have a flatter, more consistant curve of resolution and distortion than even things like the canon 24-70 f2.8 and the nikon equivelant can't touch. They also make the worlds widest zoom at 7-11mm.

Remember the best is yet to come...
