I never use that in any camera but one never knows. The little flash on the GF1 is nice at night, very dark at about 1/5 sec...f4 maybe and the flash blurs nicely...

well tried to do some long exposures with the E-P1.. AF couldn't lock onto anything because it was too dark.. MF was difficult too with the dark image and without distance scale.. the only solution was to shine a flash light and then fire the AF, or use a camera that has built-in AF assist light...
Yes, the AF is flawed on these cameras, but they are still fun to use. The Leica X1's AF might be slow in comparison, but it locks onto things very easily and accurately even in the dark.

Turning on live boost on the E-P2 is the closest I've come to having night vision goggles. Sure it's not perfect, but I can use it to focus with my legacy lenses pretty consistently. Autofocus or no, you CAN use the Pen in low light conditions.
I mean really - how dark can it be in these situations? I don't see this as a reason to pass on buying either of these M43 cameras. Unless you're a spy. In which case, give Q. a call and see what he's got for you.

I am starting with the GF1 and find the AF to better.
The big reason is the adjustable AF target size.
With the smallest target, I am able to get focus lock in very low light.

I have not discovered how to start a new line of enquiry so I will insert this question here, if I may, since it seems not entirely inappropriate....is there such a thing as an adapter to allow c-mount lenses (the cine camera c-mount) to be used on Leica-M cameras? This would be a route, via other adapters, for such lenses to be used on cameras with four-thirds sensors and the results might be interesting. Not sure whether such a fitting would focus to infinity, though......

I just wish they would put distance scale on the LCD!!! Is there a technical limiation as to why they don't have it?
Or at least allow us to set the lens focus to infinity like on the GRD

Yeah, the engineers with all their brilliant minds decided that Hyperfocal Distance was an illusion. So they created a Focus By Wire method that lets the lens just keep turning and turning and the camera and the shooter never really knows where it's focused at.
It doesn't matter to them cause they see the image as a 2 dimensional reality like photographers do. This is good but the difference is that photographers know that they start with a 3 dimensional reality and engineers never know about that.....
paper, screens, all flat fields so there decided that DOF doesn't exist either....:bang:

Everyone makes a huge deal about having to hit the OK button a second time to get out of zoom focus mode with legacy lenses... am I the only one that realizes that the OK button is actually located very conveniently for pushing a second time? Pushing this button a second time is hardly difficult... sure, a half press of the shutter would be preferable... actually, it would be most preferable that the camera knew that a legacy lens was mounted and went into zoom mode with a half press and then out of zoom mode with a second half press... but the way it is now doesn't stop me from using legacy lenses... it becomes a none issue after 2 days IMO...

That's not the biggest issue. The biggest issue is, to utilize manual focus assist, the cam forces you to stay in the green box disp mode. A mode that disables your access to the other adjustment shortcut buttons on the back of the camera.

+1 here. Since the focusing is all "electronic" why not just trick the lens and put "fake" stoppers on the focusing mechanism. Couple this with a DOF scale then I'm happy.

I found the MF assist straightforward to use,my old Oly E330 has that feature also and I took to it like a Duck to water. VIVA MAITANI (R.I.P)

My brother had a GF-1 but did not like it all that much, plus the EVF is not so hot. I got a G1, and it's EVF is a lot better, plus the camera is cheaper. Other than the form factor, I'm not sure why the GF-1 sells. Given the choice between a GF-1 and an EP-1, I'd get the EP-1, with that clip on OVF, and the prime lens, it's inexpensive in the UK, and a very pretty camera.
