Olympus OM-2n problem

I'd suggest that it's a problem with the electrical current from the batteries.

As the OP states, everything works fine in manual mode, it's only in Auto that the problem arises. The fact that the mirror will sometimes release when tapping the bottom plate would indicate to me there may be a slightly corroded wire in there somewhere.

Unless you're really emotionally attached to that particular camera, I'd just leave and use it in manual mode as the cost of getting something like that fixed would probably run into several times what the camera's actually worth.

Wow. The OP stated that he uses the SR44s. He's tried the usual. Using film to test it is good suggestion. Fixing it locally is a good suggestion. Mine had new light seals and a minor service for $160 Australian. Great camera. They designed this camera brilliantly. It even takes perfect auto exposures when the camera is set to OFF, at least if metered speed is above 1/30 or 1/60s, can't remember which. It won't cost much to fix, if it even needs fixing.
