Olympus PENF Quick Return Mirror

Should the Olympus PEN-F (the original Gothic F 2 stroke model) mirror fully return to the viewing position after shutter release? I just saw one where the mirror returns half way, and only fully resets on the first winding stroke. This is without a lens mounted. The instruction manual indicates that the wind lever advances film, presets the shutter, swings the mirror into position, and presets the automatic aperture. Does that mean that not fully returning the mirror after exposure is normal for this model? I never heard that mentioned before, do not have access to another one for comparison.

I have not worked with the Pen-F, only the single-stroke FT. A couple of the six FT bodies I have worked with showed this symptom, and others could be made to do so - unfortunately. I think this is caused by a problem with a slipped advance pawl, or possibly a disengagement between the mirror actuator and the aperture stop-down mechanism. I do not have the competence to repair the problem, meaning I have a couple of bodies that are either destined to be parts donors, or are on their way to John Hermanson (zuiko.com) or maybe Robert Jagitsch (rangefinderrestorations.com).

Yes it should return.

The problem is with the mirror actuator mechanism which can be found under the base plate. Usually it just needs cleaning and lubing.

However, to do the job properly requires the mirror box to be pulled and that's not so easy. But, the chances are all the dust seals around the prisms are shot and need replacing so when the mirror box is pulled, that could be done as well.
