What about starting a Olympus question and answer page so we don't have to mess up the other threads?


What focus screens will fit the OM4? I like the original OM1 screen better.

Is there a cut-off serial number for the battery issues on the OM4? Can this be corrected?

All OM focus screens fit the OM-4, OM4T, OM-4Ti, OM-3, OM-3Ti, and OM-2sp.

The OM-1 and OM-2 only take the 1-series screens (screens 2-4 and 2-13 only fit the cameras named above).
 
Some OM-4 bodies eat batteries. The OM-4T and OM-4Ti fixed the problem, and a lot of older OM-4 bodies were repaired by having the 4T electronics installed in them.
 
That answer on screen compatibility is a useful one. Though the screen I like best is a pretty rare one, I only had it fitted to an OM-1 in the past, and I wasn't at all sure it'd fit an OM2SP.

Incidentally, is there any good online guide to the screens available and their codes?
 
I will have an opportunity next week to look at an OM1 and two OM lenses (28mm f3.5 and 75-150mm f4) for sale locally on Craigslist, supposedly in excellent cosmetic and operating condition (for $40!).

I have many manual focus cameras and I'm not sure if I want to get into another brand. I'm interested because I have heard many good things about these cameras but online information about the lenses seems indicate quality can be hit or miss. If I did pick this up I'd likely have the body CLA'd and pick up a 50mm and possibly a 200mm lens so I would spend more money on it.

Please comment, especially on the lens quality. For context, as you can see from my list of cameras I'm not a "high-end" camera user and just a long-time serious amateur.

The OM-4 finder is very good IMO ... but the OM-1 is definitely a few notches above it. I haven't used a lot of SLRs but the ones I have used always get a fail for their finders. Once you've looked through a good OM-1 finder it's hard to be satisfied with anything else.

Forty bucks for the camera and two lenses? Yeah, that's a steal. You can send it to Camtech for the CLA, or overhaul as they call it - Olys are all they do. The proprietor there is John Hermanson, and is a member here.

The OM-4/4T/4Ti/3/3Ti/2sp cameras have slightly dimmer finders than the OM-1 and OM-2. This is because they use a semisilvered mirror that lets some light pass through to the metering cell in the bottom of the mirror box.
 
It can be a little hard to get your head around spending a couple of hundred dollars CLAing a camera that only cost you the equivalent of a movie and a burger but I am so glad I did that with my OM-1. The camera is very slick in it's operation and the meter is dead accurate ... and from memory a new prism only added forty dollars to the bill.

At some stage I'll probably get John to do my OM-3. :)

to paraphrase another saying... your camera age and neglect related issues may vary.

My OM4 microprism matte finder knocks the socks off my OM1 split-prism finder in terms of clarity.
 
Which screen has the matte fresnel with central micro prism circular area (similar to Nikon J screen) ? I'd love to replace the 1-13 in my I OM-4 with one?!

Done, I got the lens apart, cleaned the elements and they came
out great the spots and dust are gone, there still a bit of fungus
in the front elements but not bad I'll leave it for another day.
the lens is easy to take apart, so if you have a 50mm that you
love there easy to do.

Range Rover - I've been meaning to clean the glass in my 50 mm f1.8. Managed to take the bottom mounting ring off but couldn't get any further. Tried unscrewing the bottom lens element (group?) but it wouldn't budge. Could you elaborate on how you went about cleaning yours?
