I was invited along for a ride to Blacksburg, VA (from Roanoke) by the members of the Commonwealth Coach and Trolley Museum, where I sometimes hang around. Their mission is to preserve and display mostly busses from companies that operated in Virginia. The trolley part of the name comes from the system that used to operate in Roanoke, before busses took over.
Our ride this evening is so we can meet up with the New RiverValley members that can't always make it to Roanoke for meetings and work nights. We took one of the two latest acquisitions, called a Buffalo because of the humpback style of it's roofline. I remember riding one of these when I went into the service, and this one is still in top shape. The top has a cap covering the hump, as some operators thought it gave the bus a newer look.
Bev Fitzpatrick, CC&T President was our driver and host.

The weather didn't look good for taking a road trip up the mountain. This was downtown Roanoke, VA about an hour before we were supposed to depart the buseum.

Well, there's a nice omen. Good way to start the trip.

Just keep your eyes on the road, driver.

Driving through the mountains is hard on large vehicles, so VDOT is widening I-81 to put in truck lanes, blasting their way from Ironto to Christiansburg. Most of the blasting should be done by the end of June, ending the "Daily Detour" onto US-11 that has become a daily headache for some.

Ready To Party by br1078phot, on Flickr
We've arrived safe and sound, thanks to Bev's expertise. And the weather has improved, with the rain stopping. Now its time to grab some grub.

Right across from the campus of Virginia Tech, PK's is a great place to gather your friends for some excellent food and drink. Freddy says "Come on in".
