Olympus Trip - Determining DOF?

At f2.8, do ya'll [not southern, just worked in this question] know what the actual focus range is? Do you think it's exactly the distance shown on the bottom of the lens or the range shown or ?

Having just looked at mine, I think you'll find that the markings at the bottom are just the distances that the symbols indicate in the Judas windiw, and the reason it looks a bit like a scale is because its marked in metres - matching the clickstops - and feet - which don't match the clickstops.

In short, DOF is by God and by guess!

It's possible that someone on the Trip 35 group on Flickr has worked it out - there's lots of Trip users there - or if not you are guaranteed lots of opinions!

thanks for the reply. i will check out the flickr group. i guess my main question is: if the camera decided to shoot wide open on automatice or you choose 2.8, how in the heck can you get something in focus [given the assumed short dof]. that's my main question. will ask on flickr.

You can't choose f/2.8 - that's for flash. Everything is automatic.

It's an old Trip 35 trick. When there's not enough light for the A-mode and the red flag will rise, simply choose f/2.8 from the aperture ring. Trip will now use the slower 1/40s shutter speed. Shoot away and hope for the best.

Paul T, you can choose f2.8 - it just defaults to 1/40th like Mablo stated. But my question has to do with how I can ensure my subject is in focus because i assume 2.8 has a shallow DOF so I would like to know what distance range is in focus at the 4 settings. I guess it's safe to assume exactly what is aligned under the lens for distance - I guess I can do some tests with a ruler and develop. Just wondering if anyone knows.

Oh, sorry if I patronised you, I did think they were proper aperture settings on mine at one point and others have made that mistake.

I understand the camera may ignore the manual setting of 2.8 - but I assume if i light meter properly knowing it will be at 1/40th - that if the light is right - it will choose 2.8. Or, that I can fake it out by covering the selenium meter - holding down the shutter part way - then composing shot and shooting. But either way - I am wondering if you know what the 'focus range is' - i will try a ruler and see myself.
