Hello all, I replaced my lightseals in my XA using self-stick felt I purchased at a craft/hobby store. Does anyone have any experience with this type of material?

Has small pieces of the felt shedded and caused any problems?

Thank you.

I replaced the seals on my XA using "Foamies" from Michael's Craft Shop. At first they seemed to be too thick, but they compress down very well.

I tried the non-self-stick felt once and got it glued all over my fingers and left little pieces in the camera. It was too hard to deal with so I went to the "Foamie" brand. The seals work fine.

I did the same with my 35RC and so far it has worked fine. Not noticed any felt shedding.

I have decided there two really outstanding choices for XA re-seal material. In my opinion, the best is the 1mm self-adhesive fabric seal (as sold in my light seal kits). The second best way is by using a self-adhesive LDPE 1mm closed cell foam (which is not in the kit, but which I'll send you for a small charge). The gap between the body and the door of these cameras is less than 1mm. At the hinge end (up in the inner radius of the corners), the gap becomes as small as 0.4 to 0.6mm. The 1mm fabric seal is produced in such a manner as to prevent shedding, but the 1.6mm fabric seal can not be made in that same manner. The stuff from craft stores is...unfortunately not anything I can endorse. It is made in China, and we have no idea what it is made from. The factors for it are all wrong...compression set, durometer, density, rebound, etc...they all run opposite to what we want a foam used in a camera to do. The XA2 I use personally was re-sealed with the 1mm fabric 2 or 3 years ago, and has proven to be clean and light-tight since the day it was done. I have another which was done in the LDPE about 4 or 5 years ago, and it has also held up perfectly. Because the fabric seal was used in so many Japanese, German and other cameras, I elected to include it in the kits to the exclusion of the LDPE. Hope this helps.
