I have a black OM-4 that works ok aside from a couple of issues. The metering is about a stop and a half out and for some reason when you use the EV compensation dial, occasionally it shifts the ISO setting. I contacted John Hermanson and he said it's a problem he's familiar with and a normal CLA would probably sort it out. It can however be used exactly like it is of course provided you fudge the ISO setting to allow for the meter innacuracy and are careful with the compensation dial. Aside from this the camera is in very nice condition and the only blemishes are a litttle degrading of the black paint in a couple of spots. The viewfinder is clean and bright and it doesn't suffer from any abnormal battery drain. Since getting an OM-3 I have zero need for this camera and I really can't be bothered going through the hassle of selling it ... I'd rather give it away and have a little fun at the same time! 🙂

In this thread you have to answer my question in whatever way you think may appeal to me the most. I'll give it a day or so and then I'll decide which answer I like best and the winner will have a free OM-4 on the condition they pay for postage. I'll announce the winner on Sunday night my time.

Now for the question:

The OM-1 is fairly obviously the best SLR ever made ... but tell me why? 🙂

hmmmm, if I had to debate and defend the position, I would say that it is because the OM1 "takes a beating and keeps on ticking" but doesn't cost or weigh as much as a Leicaflex SL2, and probably has 1/3rd of the Leicaflex SL2's parts count.

It is not, but would it be it would certainly has something to do with the tiny size and smooth operations combined with a very quiet and delicate shutter sound.

PS : I would make good use of an om4 anyway. ;-)

because Cheryl got drunk the night before and passed out against the surfboat next morning on the beach, and I took one of the best photos of my life with my OM-1 when I saw her.

The OM1 is the best SLR ever made because the your OM4 is missing in my collection and I´m pretty sure it would love to visit Germany. 🙂

Because it is a beginning of a Zen chant - Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............................................................................................

Because it was originally called M-1 to model the Leica M series in a SLR rebirth but Leica said no.

I find it the best because it offers me a viewfinder that is as good as my Leicaflex and better than my F3hp while offering controls that are straight-forward, simple and, after just a couple of rolls, really astonishingly intuitive. Simple, clean, and quiet it allows for photography without the camera becoming a distraction.

At least for me, all of this is why my other film systems are going away and my OM setup that somehow quickly grew to several lenses when I wasn't paying attention is staying.

Best SLR can't have described issue...I think you mixed it with some of your Nikons!

just couldn't resist 🙂
