OM-4 give away ... if you answer my question correctly.

I am only 25, and I am no doubt a rookie. But for me it is the mechanical, amazing feel of it that speaks to its user, the shutter speed ring around the lens mount is the most genius thing ever added to any SLR, the size... yes, THE SIZE, they made it as small as an ME super, with all the features and more of a Nikon F2, its just the pinnacle of camera design. It is truly the leica of SLR's or even better.

If I had one of my own I would take it EVERYWHERE with me, and THAT is why it is the best camera EVER made to me. Because it is so unpretentious and individual and comfortable, ANYONE can fall in love with this camera, it just speaks to you. Whispers in your ear and lets you know that YOU the photographer can forget about all the distractions of top mounted shutter speed dials, doo dads, and batteries, it gives you the freedom to JUST SHOOT, and have fun, and realize YOUR potential!! Not the camera's strengths, But, YOUR strengths, shine through with this camera... this is rare in a camera, especially today with all the contrast AF, Megapixels, and crop rates... there's no room for just making art... well my friend, there still is with at least one camera... .the OM-1 🙂

I hope you give it to someone who will use the heck out of it, she deserves it ! Good Luck!

Persons who believe the OM-1 is the best SLR ever made have remarkably high IQ, are friendly and thoughtful, and well liked by everyone they meet. They take excellent photographs, even with inferior camera equipment.

They said the OM-1 was the Poor Man's Nikon, but the OM-1 owner knows wealth comes from more than money. It comes from within, and especially from good friends.

The OM-1 is not pretentious. It is functional and durable, and pleasant to use. While it is the best, a near contender is a good user OM-4, the finest automatic SLR ever made.

How much is postage to Texas from Down Under?

Back in the good old days -- the 1960s and 1970s -- almost every big time press photog used the Nikon F. A friend of mine who worked for an international wire service bought an OM-1. He shot a lot of photos on movie and TV sets and he did not have to "Blimp" the OM-1 like you would have to blimp the noisy motorized Nikon F. The OM-1 was quiet, small and light, had a big, bright viewfinder and the glass was absolutely stunning. I'm an old time press photog and still have my Nikon F (naturally). But I also have a perfect OM-10 a friend gave to me and a Camedia digital Olympus. I cannot believe how great the lenses are on the Olympus cameras. I believe they never got the reverence they deserve.

because Cheryl got drunk the night before and passed out against the surfboat next morning on the beach, and I took one of the best photos of my life with my OM-1 when I saw her.

ps, I hate it when that happens!

Because it can be:

A weapon against thieves in the night

A special brassed heirloom with stories to tell

An object d'art

A camera to cure the blues

A viewfinder to constrain the eye and release the mind

and lastly

A paintbrush for youthful games, endless joy, and timeless fame

Granny.jpg

This is a photo of my grandmother which I took back in late 1980, early 1981. It was taken on the OM1 I borrowed from college, at the time owning an OM1 was beyond my means. However thanks to that camera I was hooked - the photo bug had bit. Years passed, cameras, jobs, countries and wives came and went - but I never did get around to owning an OM1. There was always something shinier, newer and flashier to acquire. This photo passed into family legend, as my grandmother passed away very soon after I took it. I also lost the negative, so all that existed were a couple of prints made in the college dark room. Then a few months ago the negatives showed up in my uncle's house. They had lain in the bottom of a drawer for over 30 years. So I quickly scanned the neg, and here it is.

Enumerating the benefits of the OM1 can get tedious, and starts to sound like an advertisement from the 1980s. An OM4 sounds nice, but would mean time away from shooting my OM1. So just give your camera to Lynnb, his reason rocks!

Lynn definitely is the man to beat here so far it seems. 😀

Just because he has a great photo and a short, interesting story I don't think that automatically qualifies for winner. I'm thinking somebody is going to have some Zen philosophy that explains the reason the OM-1 is such a great camera. Bob.

I wasn't going to reply because I've already got too many different camera platforms to support. But a friend of mine gave me an OMG, and an OM-10 with the Manual Control Device. The G is dead, and I'm not sure I want to bother with it. But I got the 10 back up and running, even buying a T-20 flash down at the junktique store.

Two words: Beautiful finder. Had this camera system been around when I bought into Nikon, I may have made a different choice. I haven't shot the 10 yet, as I've been busy with a lot of stuff lately, but I've been practicing with the controls, trying to get used to the sequence of operation before I load it up. It's a very beautiful camera, right down to the circular strap rings that came with it. I may eventually get some more lenses and bodies to keep the 10 company, but I'm not in a rush to do so. Reading all the comments about the 1 does pique my interest, and makes me want to explore the system a little deeper.

I remember days like Jamie Pillars had, and Lynnb. But no amount of chick magnets are going to help me out these days. And it's been 25 years since I've been drunk. But I'll give my vote, and chance of winning, to either one of them. They deserve it.

I'd say it's because the OM-1 is the SLR version of everything the Leica M tries to accomplish. Compact, unobtrusive, reliable, dead simple to operate, and a great selection of lenses. It's got everything you need and absolutely nothing else you don't, and it strives to excel at the few simple things it does. (you just have to look through the massive viewfinder to see that!)

These qualities shared by the Leica M and the OM-1 are not what everyone is looking for in a camera. However, if they are, you really can't find anything better!

Pretty much how I feel. I'd have simply said, Because it is the most Leica-Like of all SLRs, and is the SLR that Leica Should Have Made.
