My latest auction venture was not exactly a success, so I have a question: how fixable is a stiff aperture ring on a Zuiko 50mm f1.4? I now have the dubious privilege of owning a dodgy MC version with <1m serial number.

Verrrry nice! Can't afford one myself, so I'll have to settle for my bulkier 35/2.8
but if you can find the deal on the bay then it is the same price as a 35mm/f2........
i found two within 1 year both for around 200usd each...
first one had a problem with the auto-aperture (seems to be a common issue with the rotating thread when people set the lens down hard with the camera) and another one had fungus issues.
fixing it here (in HK= 50usd) was pretty cheap, so I cleaned the fungified one, and returned the other.
the 40mm f2 looks great through the viewfinder. after using one you would wonder why you were using a 50mm or 35mm.

I could see liking the 40/2 over the 50/1.8 and 50/1.4. And I would definitely take it over either 35.
I do prefer the 50/1.2 and 50 macros though.

I still love my Olympus gear. OM-1 was my first real camera. I've had a bunch of lenses, some better than others. The 16mm rectilinear fisheye is my prize. I think I have an 85f2 still somewhere. I'll look for it and let you know. I see in the post below that someone has the 24f2.8. That is the single best and most used lens I've ever owned! Pick one up, you won't be sorry.I've been reading threads here from all you dedicated OM users, looking at your photos, and a whole bunch on Flickr with the appropriate tags. At first I was interested, then intrigued, and finally obsessed! I knew I couldn't rest until I found an OM1 or OM2.
Today, was the Greensboro Camera Show. There were buyers, sellers and traders there, including KEH. I left there with a black OM1md that looks almost brand new. It had just been CLA'ed which included a battery conversion job. I also picked up a chrome OM2 that's not quite as pretty but it was just CLA'ed too and works great.
The guy's name was Tom Actipes, a nice guy. He's from Illinois I think. He and his wife have a business called TAANA Photography. He also had a bunch of Pentax stuff, K1000's and LX's, ME's, MX's - but I had to have the OM's!
Unfortunately, there were no Zuiko lenses except for a few 50/1.8's. The OM2 I bought came with a 50/1.8 so I did get to shoot some this afternoon. Even though I was the third customer in the door, the dealers were there an hour before they let us in, and a buyer from Brooklyn Camera beat me to the other Olympus stuff. He walked out of there with a ton of Olympus bodies and lenses, including some 50/1.2's and 1.4's, 28's, 35's and 85's. D'oh!
But I do have a 50/1.4 (LN, in box) with a serial number well over 1,100,000 on the way from KEH. I'm also looking for a 28/2 and thinking about going with a two bodies, two lenses system. Of course I may need an 85 for a portrait lens, so maybe I'll have to get another OM!
I'll post some photos once I've shot a few rolls. My thanks to all you OM enthusiasts here! I've learned a lot from reading your posts. You've really inspired me, and after spending an afternoon with the OM2 I couldn't be happier. It feels so much better than the huge freaking DSLR and zooms I was using, but guess what - I also got a great deal on an E-520 with kit lens, and still had enough left over to make a car payment after selling my K20D and lenses! Maybe I don't deserve it, but I'll take it! What a weekend!

Hi, I am Erwin from Philippines, recently got OM1n with 50mm f1.8 lens. Tried 3 rolls of color film so far. I have a very low accuracy when it comes to focusing, I have the split-type prism and matte screen. Can you share me your techniques regarding focusing? Sometimes, I thought I was in focus but after developing and scanning it, it comes out soft and focused at the wrong part of the body. I mostly shoot portraits.

i think there's something wrong with your gear. Focusing a 50mm with the OM1 viewfinder shouldn't be a problem

Perhaps check that the focus screen is installed correctly. beyond that, your lens might be a lemon (if someone tried "fixing" it). Try testing the body with another lens. Maybe John will chime in here with some better-informed ideas.

Hi all,
I recently purchased a 135mm f3.5. I was described as excellent, but has damage to the mount. The seller didn't have another in stock and gave me credit towards another purchase and let me keep the lens.
The lens will not mount. It will will make a partial turn towards the mounted position before getting stuck. Since the lens is essentially free and doesn't appear to have any other issues, I'd like some advice on repairing it. Do I need to replace the mount, and maybe one or two other parts, or is there something I can do with the existing mount to free it up to turn all the way to the mounted position? Hope the two photos show enough information for advice.

If I had that, and the lens was essentially free, and I was going to attempt to make it better, I would take some fine files and clean up all sides. To me, it doesn't look that terrible or difficult to make better.

I think the om1 needs to visit the repairman.
Thank you for your suggestions.
