OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

Keith, If you ever have the opportunity to focus an OM with a series 2
screen, it will quite literally "knock your socks off." Failing a Oly screen,
take a look through a camera with a Beatty screen installed. Either of
these will restore your faith in the 'master.'
 
Yes, the "2" screens make about a two-stop difference. I just last night got my "new" OM-1n back from Camtech who did a CLA, converted the battery to 1.5v and adjusted the meter to suit the "2" screen.

Note that John H. also installed Cameraleather's grey Griptak covering - it's everything Morgan said it to be - already I love it. As soon as it's daylight, I'm going out and shoot.
 
Oh ... and I meant to say Chippy I appreciate what you're saying about the potential of the OM with a better screen and just how good it actually can be but that would mean there is obviously room for improvement in a lot of SLR's and DSLR's I suspect.

Hopefully at some stage I will find an OM-4t or OM-3 and I can live the dream for myself as they say! I can only imagine how bright an OM finder with the number 2 screen and 1.2 lens must be ... and I already have the 1.2 lens! 😛

Damn ... I just had my OM-1 CLA'd by John. It would have been a worthwhile addition to the bill by the sounds of it! 😀

I'm used to doing that with my OM-2 ... it's meter over exposes by 2/3 of a stop according to my Sekonic!

As much as I like the idea of spot metering in a camera I don't crave it. I have little trouble getting very accurate exposures with the OM-1's meter ... once you work out how weighted it is towards the centre and become familiar with it, it's no trouble. I have to say I disagree with Chris's opinion of center weighted meters (useless) ... I think they're more than adequate most of the time.

I've noticed that the meter in the FM3A seems to have a stronger centre bias than the OM.

Any time you want to sell that OM-3 Chippy just let me know! 😀

Nope .... the OM2 just has a flabby meter!

I've taken all my OM screens out and checked them and they're all the same type ... sadly! 😛
 
I'm a bit of a fan of the plain matt screen ... I find the distractions in the centre a bit of a hinderance when focusing and quite often find myself focusing off to one side then re-composing which kind of defeats the purpose of using an SLR against a rangefinder in the first place.

I love the plain acute matt screen on my Hasselblad and would like all my SLRs set up the same way!

The screen of the OM-40 is said to be a 2-13 screen. So buying a broken body and harvesting the screen could be interesting. I prefer the 2-4 plain-matte one, which is really nowhere to be found anymore. Where's the time I bought them new in Tokyo for 40$ a piece...

Got the OM2 I bought off ebay for $40 today... A bit of a dissapointment - VF rot, fungus in lens and rough as hell body. I suppose that's what you get with a lucky dip camera from ebay. Funnily enough put a battery in it and it works so I'm shooting off a few rolls before I open it and have a go at cleaning it up.

I have to say, after about a year or so of not having an OM, whilst opening the package and holding the camera in my hands for the first time in a little while, I seriously love OMs. I think I like them more than Leica Ms. They just suit me so freaking well..

I'm considering an OM3.

To me Zuiko means all things Olympus ... the premier Olympus SLR camera, lens and repair site is after all zuiko.com owned and run by John Hermanson who also happens to be a member here. The title of this thread is ... OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

Apart from which ... this is RFF where the title of a thread has bugger all to do with what we actually discuss at times ... have you not been paying attention? 😛 😀

I hate to put another foot on your balloon, KK... but, PGGUNN's OP started this thread with , "I've been reading threads here from all you dedicated OM users, looking at your photos, and a whole bunch on Flickr with the appropriate tags. At first I was interested, then intrigued, and finally obsessed! I knew I couldn't rest until I found an OM1 or OM2."

That said, and staying on track, I wanted to agree with JSU's post. I've used both the 3 and the 4 and find them both too fiddley. The OM-1n that I just got back from Camtech is my "forever camera'... and at my age, I can say it and mean it. It's paired with an OM-2n, my fave for night shots.

not sure i agree about the OM2 having a cleaner or simpler viewfinder than the OM-4Ti, the OM4 is cleaner because the ex[osure info in moved out of the screen to below it, where as the OM2 all the number and needles etc are in the screen...to some it doesnt cause a hinderance but it is there non the less

certainly the viewfinder is very bright in the OM2 with a number 2 screen (yeah it does seem to work Keith-i must of got my wires crossed before)

Ah Chippy ... I'm glad you're back!

Continuing with my comparison of focusing ease in minimal light between the OM-1 and FM3A I'm puzzled now. The FM3A is definitely easier to focus than my OM-1 and it appears to be due to pure screen quality ... so maybe it's not the original screen in the Nikon?

I should have a look I guess!

The other thing I wanted to ask you was where is the best deal for a plain matt beattie screen for an OM-1?

I never understood the differences between OM-3, OM-4 and OM-4Ti. Now on this thread someone said the "2 series" viewing screen is two stops better than the standard screen in my OM-2, but how can I check the viewing screen model on eBay auctions ?

Out of curiosity ... why do you favour the OM-2N for night shots?
