OM sick

About four years ago our home was burgled, we were away for a weekend break so they had bags of time to plunder our stuff including most of the OM kit I’d been building up for 30 years, almost everything went, even the original boxes. Felt pretty angry at the time, I’m over it now, but every time Joe buys one of “my” lenses I get that funny homesick feeling, how soft is that!

i know that i also hate that feeling of being taken advantage of and the thought of some low life in my home, going through my things makes me livid.

have you started to rebuild your om kit?
it is not very expensive these days and with patience, there are bargains out there to be had.
look at my sig and all that om gear was had for about 500 bucks, u.s.
the best bargains were from here and other photo sites and that $11. 135/3.5 lens was just luck, right place, right time.

I had the original 1972 om1 and a f2 28 with me and they missed a m3 with a 35 in my brief case, and some old stuff in a display cabinet, I’ve been building the M kit up since, I like to buy new, but it takes me ages to decide what I want and months to decide if I made the right choice so its slow work, most of the insurance money is still untouched
Keep watch for a 35 f2, I don’t think that one ever got the reputation it deserved

Keith: It's been awhile since I've read the full interview(s), and there are some new (to me) quotes in there. "Basically we only had a dream" really resonantes, especially given that management was insisting on a copy-cat product. How long has it been since a camera system designer had the dream and was able to carry it through by fighting off the bean counters? Mr. K comes to mind, but I'm not aware of too many others. Thanks for refreshing me with the link.

I agree with Stewart about the 35/2. Underrated. If I had one I'd put away all my other Zuikos for quite a spell. Except maybe the 21/2.

Edit: There are other views on the 35/2, so I base my opinion on highly subjective impressions from some good shots I've seen (on the web, not prints/slides) by various photographers. My overall impression is that it is somewhat lower in contrast than the 35/2.8, esp. wide open. That may be its advantage under appropriate shooting conditions.

For what it's worth I vote for the 35/2 as well. It's not as contrasty as some but resolution is very good and it has a very smooth look:

That’s how I see it, and bags of fine drawn detail anywhere from f2.8, never used it much for colour however

Good point - I don't think I've every tried any colour at all with it (except on the E1); that may be part of where the differences of opinion come from. I do think it's a great B+W lens.

If you decide you want to replace your OMs just ask; I don't have a spare 35/2 but I do have an embarassing number of OM1s and 2s they just keep turning up free from friends who've gone digital...

that’s a very kind offer thanks, but I’m concentrating on the m-mount for now, it wouldn’t see any real use, and luckily the one I still have is my “first love” from the first batch into the country in 72 or 73, those where the escarpment pokes up through the mirror box, I’ll probably pick up my favourite telly lenses for it at some point

I love my OM system. I have an early OM-1 I bought of Gene W and a OM-4 which developed a seized shutter speed ring, why, only my camera tech will know when he fixes it.

I am a big fan of the single digit OM system, I find I am reaching for it often this fall.
