Hi

I wonder which 50 to get for my OM system. I thought about the macro 50/2 but wouldn't mind the extra stops of the faster lens.
It's just that the 1.2 has even more nervous bokeh at 1.2 than the 1.4 has at 1.2.

So how does it look like at f2 or 2.8? I couldn't find samples at these apertures at all.

Does it smooth out? And hows detail rendition and contrast at f2 compared to the macro?

Thanks
Bernhard

You must be thinking of a different lens (55/1.2?).

I love the OOF rendering of my 50/1.2. Better than the 50/1.4 IMO. The 50/1.2 also renders tones very nicely and is more rectilinear than my 50/1.4 (> 1.1 Mio).

Can you show an example/reference ?

Roland.

I agree with Roland. The bokeh is very good for such a fast optic IMO and while it's a little soft at f1.2 it's a lot better than the Canon 50mm f1.2 RF lens I have.

On an OM-1 with the right screen it's an absolute killer low light setup.

Thanks. So would you recommend it as an everyday lens? I already have a MIJ 50 1.8 and wonder if I should get a 50/2 macro or 1.2....the 1.8 is really nice from 2.8 onwards, but at 1.8 it lacks contrast and is a bit wonky in terms of bokeh :)

Hi Bernhard,

maybe with the exception of the Summilux ASPH, all faster than f1.8 50mm lenses will have some trouble with leaves in the background.

You can see in this shot that you quoted, that the Zuiko 50/1.2 does quite well actually, almost no / very thin "donut borders" ...

Here is the lens in more typical (for me) Scenarios, wide open and on film:

and here is f4 (or 5.6 ?) style landscape bokeh on film:

There is something to the B+W rendering that I really like about this lens (not sure why, but I prefer it over the 1.1 Mio 50/1.4)

I can warmly recommend the Zuiko 50/1.2 as a general purpose lens. I think it is better in all respects and at all f-stops when compared to both MIJ 50/1.8 (which I like) and > 1.1Mio 50/1.4 (which I can't get to like for some reason). The fact that the 50/1.2 is not much bigger than the 50/1.4 (49mm filter thread) makes it even more attractive.

No first hand experience with the 50/2 Macro. But I like a bright viewfinder, and when I want sharp and the straightest lines possible, I use an M and Summicron :)

Hope this helps,

Roland.
