I suspect that Chris' OM has had damage to the back and/or latch and this is the root cause of the issue. Of course bad seals don't help, but in my experience seals are not nearly important in an OM as one would think. The back structure of the OM is its weakest point, IMO. Once it is out of alignment or warped, it is often better to seek out a replacement part.
