OMD-EM5 Pics

Charlie Brown & Snoopy, the Seattle night shots are solid, and Johann's shots are wonderful (I especially like the one in color) but honestly the image quality does not look any better than the ground breaking Nikon D90 (2008). So in some ways I'm thinking it's a big improvement for micro 4/3s sensors but still behind the APS-c sensor. I'd expect the 4/3s to catch up pretty soon. Definitely within the next couple of years.

In your opinion, how does the APS-C sensor stack up against FF sensors? And what about FF against MF digital? ...... Is your current camera ground breaking compare to a MF camera with IQ180 back?

P.S. I obviously don't care about the answer as it is pointless IMO... much like what you've said above.

At 1/40 f2.5 ISO 1600 -0.3 panny 20 1.7, this was a quick focus w/o the AF focus assist

What lens was used for this?
All the shots that I posted were taken with the Oly 12-50mm. It was raining pretty heavily at times that morning and having the entire set water resistant was somewhat reassuring. At one point, I was dabbing water drops off the front of the lens.

So, here are some examples taken at 6400 ISO, at the Seattle Coldplay concert, last night. These were all with the 12-50mm lens. These are lowly JPEGS converted from RAW, using the Lightroom 4.1RC2. This release candidate contains the RAW converter for the EM-5, but not documented. To say I'm impressed with the capabilities of this camera, is an extreme understatement! The AF under these conditions was extremely quick, with no apparent shutter lag (see shot 5).

Larry, those are mighty impressive shots.

And I'm not just talking about the camera or the folks on the stage.

I can echo that statement! Really great shots sir.

Were those sooc? I see you said that they were converted, but was there any post color or contrast or etc tweaking there?

Thanks! :)

These were straight conversions from the Lightroom 4.1RC2 install that I did last night. Direct import, with a JPEG output, the only tweak was limiting the pixel dimensions to 1000x1000. I'm using AdobeRGB for the camera. The shots were made using spot metering, with typical exposure compensation of -2 stops.

I've finally almost caught up on processing some recent photos, including those I shot during my week with the E-M5. Here are some of my favorites, all with the 12-50mm lens.

More on my Smugmug...

Just received the OM-D today. These shots are with 20/1.7, shot in RAW+Jpeg Fine (with factory standard image tuning) then the Jpegs transferred to iPhone via Eye-Fi (OM-D is "Eye-Fi Connected") then to iPhoto via Photo Stream. Quick basic tuning done in iPhoto on some photos, but no noise reduction or drastic PP applied. MINI, coffee table and kitty shots are at ISO 1600.

Nice bokeh and high ISO performance there Sug - from a m43 camera : who would have have though that was possible ;)

Hope you as happy with it as I am.
Next time there's a SF meet we can compare the aesthetics of black vs silver bodies.

THAT is ISO 1600?
Goodness, if this thing is not selling like hot cakes in winter, I don't know what people are smoking.

Sug, what do you mean by "Eye-Fi" connected?

Thanks guys.

Looking good, the panny 20 1.7 and OMD seems to be a perfect combo.
Yeah it is really great, but I foolishly sold mine when I got out of m4/3 system last time, and this is my friend's copy. I should be getting my 45/1.8 back from that friend shortly so I'm looking forward to the results with the equally impressive 45mm.

Love to check out the silver body. I personally prefer the leatherette covering of the silver one tho I wanted the black body. Aki-asahi is working on the new coverings for the OM-D so I might try that in the future. So far I am very impressed with the OM-D.

It's quite good for this "tiny" sensor huh? Picasa does rather aggressive compression so the details are lost in the photos above, but I can see myself using @1600 regularly without hesitation.

Eye-Fi card works on most cameras, but those specifically designed cameras can turn on/off the wireless function of the card from camera menu, and can stay on until the transfer is over. I've been shooting with RAW+Jpeg and directly transfer the Jpegs to my iPhone. RAW files are backed up to HDD once in a while just like you'd do with negative strips for later use. I am quite a big fan of computer-less workflow for casual digital photos. iPhone and iPad can do quite a bit and I don't have to deal with cables are removing the card from camera.

looks promising. i'd love to see shots with M-mount glass with adapter, especially wide angle, to see if it has the smearing and other issues the X1 Pro experiences.

m43 has been having smearing problems since its launch - long before the Xpro1.
Wide M lenses suck on m43 and with the crop a 21mm wide becomes a 42mm standard of mediocre performance.
This is now rather irrelevant now as m43 has a good spread of native wide prime lenses : 12,14,17 and 20mm.

If you want to use M lenses, the Ricoh GXR has offset micro lenses and was specifically designed to work well with M glass.

bruno, i really like your color street shots. could you please tell me what 25 PL Lux means? and what lens did you use?
thanks
tony
