On Cheaping Out versus Aiming High

Why, Bill? If you buy a camera to use it for taking photographs, you should not care about depreciation.

It appears the the RFf Editor's Desk (that's you folks...I was merely Lead Troublemaker, as usual) has had an effect on Dante's article – he's tightened up a few more grafs.

I didn't really care about depreciation of gear for exactly that reason. Then I joined RFF, saw how much buying/selling/swapping goes on, figured that was normal, and started getting real worried every time I think of buying something else, as in "will I be able to sell it for 98% of what I paid?" :bang:

IOW, this place messes with minds. :eek:

Don't know if he's a member, but obviously he cruises past with some frequency.

"Graf(s)" is just publishing shorthand for "paragraph(s)." I picked it up from being within earshot of too many conversations between writers and editors (not hard to do here in Park Slope).

Melanie: I was sort of wondering when someone would bring this up (both the toilet-training and camera-toting).

I think Koko prefers shooting film rather than digital...not into chimping like hairless apes are. ;)

Well, we do know that Koko has good taste in SLRs.

Has Dante Stella ever been published on the cover of National Geographic? Koko the gorilla has. Take that, DNA percentage-ers!

I've been meaning to ask: What is the derivation of "chimping", meaning to peak at digital photo files while shooting.

And most importantly, if they do ... do chimps prefer black or chrome finishes on their RF's?

They're very stylish creatures, chimps. These days they're ordering magenta finishes.
 
So since it's becoming clear that anything over 6 MP is pretty much wasted on most of us, why pay more for needless "capabilities"? And what's next?
 
In all fairness to the author of the piece, we'd all be hard pressed to write regularly or at length on cameras (or most any other topic) without hanging it out there once in awhile.
Overall, I've always enjoyed his site and find his perspective useful.
 
Amen. I have dealt with Dante on several occasions (bought a Kobalux 28 from him when he was selling them, for instance) and have enjoyed his website. Some very interesting discussions there that demonstrate he's no dilettante in photography, though I'm sure his writing can irritate some folks.

I'll venture a theory that there may be a visceral negative reaction to him on the part of some of what he says because he's, yes, a lawyer by profession, and a Gen Xer. Also, I may be way off base here, and you can tell me so, but I think the people he ticks off the most are those of a more scientific/engineering bent. He's also been a debunker of the much-debated incompatibility of the Hexar RF with Leica lenses, and I'm sure that irks a lot of people too.

But I do enjoy reading what he has to say -- though his agent provocateur tone may not help his cause sometimes.

Full disclosure: I'm a lawyer too.
