the rd1 has a huge optical vf at a 1:1 ratio that puts you right in the scene. i have never felt more involved in my scene or my photography. it is a true rangefinder, and for me personally, much much easier and organic to focus than the gxr where you have to press a button to magnify then focus then press button again to frame. by the end of it your scene has changed and left you behind.

R-D1 and M8.2 user here + a GXR A12 i've just received and i like much. I expected a slow body and i'm not disappointed 🙄 but it is as sharp as the M8.2 at least with a more pleasant noise rendition at 3200 iso than the Leica's at 1250 iso. The shutter noise is quieter also. As for the EVF, it is not as fast as a good rangefinder for sure but you can set it to show a magnified image at the beginning of your shooting such that you just have to half press the shutter release to recompose at each shot. I wanted a digital CL, i did not have it with the Fuji X-E2 and still don't have it with the Ricoh but difficult lenses on the former as well as on the R-D1, like the CV 21/4, perform superbly on the Ricoh.

I use M8 for almost 5 years, still love it . Later I bought Fuji X and Ricoh, but M8 deliver different things.

As a longtime, quite satisfied user of both the Sony 5n and the Ricoh GXR M-mount, I've recently acquired the Epson RD-1. I haven't used a rangefinder camera (Nikon) since my film days and thought my trade-off to an RD-1 would be for the ease once again of RF use. However, i am so pleasantly surprised that the RD-1's picture quality to me seems quite on a par with the my other two digital cameras, and perhaps even "punchier." Luckily, as I can use the same M-mount lenses on all three (with an adapter in the case of the 5n) i intend to go on using (and comparing) all three cameras. The GXR will likely still get the nod when using lenses of focal lengths not covered by the RD-1's viewfinder. For now, I'm quite in pig-heaven!

M8 files take a lot more efforts to get right tone - maybr that is just me, otherwise is the best of thr three.. M9 won't beat it.
R-D1 raw processed with EPSON RAW software, produces classic color, I always wish M9 has such JPG color profile, as an option there (I might use it most), the best part EPSON has done there.
GXR plus M mount, it is the best digital back for certain lens, i.e. Super Angulon 21/4 and 21/3.4.
