Chongqing used to be temp capital of China during WWII, Chiang Kai-shek and his Chinese/American wife madame Mei-lieng Soong used to stay/ hide there.
I believed among college students there are using digitals, your retro beautiful Leica M should attract mucho young lady students who're "interested" in "traditional photography" ( that's how they called film photography right?). I may go to Chengdu soon, I'll find you and borrow the M7...haha..
I don't think you have to worry about chrome or black or A setting starting time, lock the m7 in a save place may be more important, remember, 3 years pay for an average worker. Happy shooting!

I didnt get 40000 rmb though, I got 20,000 rmb, which is still a good chunk, and I was thinking more along the lines of useds equiptment too because i still need to be able to aford my rent (31 dollars a month)

Even better, I am a photography major, when I expressed my interest in getting a leica there was not a reaction from my class. Why? They are all second year students also studying photography, surely it must have ment something to someone right? No, most of my class has never used their camera outside P mode and why just a few weeks ago the teacher found out that only 3 of us happen to know what the appature on the lens is for....oh hell. And doesnt mater, one of the mucho young lady students is my gf who is interested in my leica even before she saw the movie Eurotrip.

ps. you can still see the bombed out air field here and many old houses painted all black so japanese bombers cant see them at night. Also Mao's (or Mao lao tou [Mao Old Head] as my gf calls him) compound is still here, but as far as I know you cant go there.

Chrome lenses are heavier due to brass being used under the chrome; black lenses are aluminum.

so I guess I dotn have to worry about one matieral over the other, heck, my canon 50 1.4 is plastic and it doesnt bother me all that much...but then again I dont expect it to last for more then a few years either

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to afford a Leica while you're in school..... I don't think the Leica will be that much of a theif magnet since I would think it's a pretty obscure brand amongst the common criminals in China.

the market for leica in china is still pretty big, and theifs usualy take first then ask questions later

Well, if it's a 1Ds M-II w 70-200 2.8 L-IS, which closed to $10k yes.
I've yet to see any M7 owners cover their red dot. the whole idea of carrying the M4-p, M6, TTL, M7 is to show off the red dot, they may not have film inside though.
I believe in the campus of the prestigious Chicago U. has thiefs among them. You put the info on internet, a westerner( I persume), carrying a shining M7, in or outside of Chongqing college campus maybe like putting a hundred dollar bill on your forehead walking around South- central Los Angeles after 6pm. Covering B Franklin's face help??
Anyway, as a Chinese, I'll say "Xiou xien yi deang..." ( a little extra carefull) to him.

I am actually half chinese so I blend in untill someone gives me a good look over and asks me if im from xin jiang province. Eh doesnt mater, this is actualy sichuan fine arts academy so its very common to see people wandering around with digital cameras hanging from their necks.

I hope Taipei-metro does attract "mucho girls", since they may be scarcer than Leicas. Given that "one kid" policy and the fact that everybody wants boys, I wonder if they know they are tempting nature. When does the supply of girls run out?

yeah isnt it also neat how girl out number boys 3-1 here?

ps. that one kid policy takes a lot of flack, but take New york, quad the population, then make it smaller, and you have chongqing. The main city here has 4 million people, but the area around the city added in is 35-40 million... with a population of 1.4 billion it is pretty nessesary to try to control the population some how, its something you really have to see to believe. Before I used to question this whole one child thing too but if you come and see you might think its a good idea...but not an effective one since most of china's population lives in the country side where they dont care about such laws since they work for themselfs and dont answer to any officials.

yeah yeah, I have actually been to taipei twice, my mother is from there and most of that side of my family lives there. Oh, and im a lousy student, my good friend who also happens to be my teacher and I disagree on everything related to photography, he says leica's are the most fragile cameras ever and not worth getting because program cameras work much better, in fact his camera is an Olympus epic, a neat camera but....um....where is the profesional control? And to make things better all the photos he says are good that the other students take I think are lousy, we have yet to agree once. wooo! But then again I am the only one who talks out in class because im a windbag.

With respect to the color of the camera I would say don't worry about it just take what comes along. Lenses though are different, you will pay a penalty in weight for Leica silver lenses because of their brass construction.

The hood BTW is an eBay special from dealer heavystar. About $7 for the 46mm wide. So much better than the ridiculous hood that comes with the lens!

yeah I think that might be the kicker right there, I think im gona go for the chrome on chrome, something about that black lens on that body that looks weird to me. Plus I also happened to fidn this photo a moment ago:
