On the link between gallery and photography

I regularly browse the galleries of some members (Swann, mal, Gerold Marti, graski and a few more) whose style or quality I like. There are so many uploads that it's difficult to find stuff that's above average, it's more a matter of luck. I don't upload regularily, just when I have something I would like to share and am curious about the reactions.
Galleries or samples from other members definitvely help to weigh their (sometimes big) statements.

Action speaks louder than words.

I really do like to see pictures (as well as read tips and discussions about gear and techniques)! Don't care, though, if they're put in the gallery here in RFF or in a blog. Personally, I prefer the latter alternative.

Glad to read this Bill ! From this and previous posts of yours it seems as if you now you have the wheel turning, and the more work you do the more offers and calls for more work you get, congrats ! 🙂

I'm guilty of having somewhat loosened my relationship with the gallery in all respects (browsing, commenting and uploading), and truth is I have no logical neither emotional reason for it. 😕

Oscar

Oscar, I could not do any of it without the support and active assistance of my wife - I mean that. She is very resolute and is willing to go without so that we can make something of this part-time business. I've also never seen anyone who could bark orders at a bunch of groomsmen at a wedding like she can - and being in the South, they just shuffle their feet and say "Yes, ma'am" and do what she says!

Yes, I can say that the work is pouring in. It threatens to overwhelm, but the income is so far not even close to what I'd need in order to quit my day job. So the balancing act goes on. This year threatens to be most interesting.

To everyone else - on the gallery - I have read the last five responses since I went to bed last night - you all make good points in favor of the gallery. Interesting! It does appear that at least to some extent, a gallery post or a link to a webpage or other display mechanism is something that some of us look at when considering the words of others. I had no idea.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

I get put off when other people's pictures look better than mine online.

I'm taking down my gallery/blog in the next few days and will set it up again afresh.

I used to post quite extensively in bursts (mostly after a trip or holiday), until there was a limit set on the daily amount of uploads. Now I just upload to _my blog_ and _my photo portfolio_.

I don't often roam the gallery, being more interested in the gabbing in the forums. 🙂 But I have to admit that there is some really good work in the galleries, and that keeps me going there at least once in a while.

Hi, I think it's a problem for this forum if one is always being expected to prove oneself instead of sharing and learning 😕

No one ever said this. Please read the posts carefully.

A gallery or a website, like a significant number of posts, does lend more credibility, in my opinion.

JohnR, based on some of the most highly visible members of RFF's galleries I would suggest you read the situation differently. Go take a look at some of these members galleries. You will see a full gamut of photographs, family, kids, pets, exotic locations, photo art .. you name it. If they don't feel a need to prove themselves why should you... right? ;- )

How about you guys? Gallery users or no? Does having a gallery affect your photographic output one way or another?
I do post pictures in the RFF gallery and on my website, but the truth is, I don't really enjoy looking at photographs on a computer screen. Only prints do it for me. So guys, if you want constructive criticism (or blind praise, for that matter), send me your prints! 😀
