On the road

Great adventure stuff Andreas. That's my red helmet and blue shirt in the Dead Sea shot. My wife shot it from the back of our motorbike.

haha John, sounds like best set up ;)

As a westerner that time one was a friend of the conservative, also religious conservative fighters of Afghanistan gaining control because they fought the Russians.
Some groups had their headquarters in Peshawar, Pakistan, one wanted to recruit me to join a fighter's group as a photographer.
As a hippy who a few years earlier had been exempted from military service for psychological reasons..I declined..
For anyone curious, there are a few more scans from Pakistan 1982 here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/albums/72157603637136059

Happy hippie trails!

Yes Peter, happy times :) Unfortunately I was too young when Afghanistan was the holy land for hippies.
A very interesting documentary from that time ( I believe Austrian, had seen it on Austrian TV years ago and again just a few hours ago, they repeated it ;) ) with English subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co9buL2OwTk

A few years after my above photos I made the road trip from Europe to India, had to bypass Afghanistan in the south, directly going from Iran to Pakistan.
Actually I didn't make it all the way to India on land though. There was another Kashmir crisis then, all land borders had been shut down and I had to take a flight from Pakistan into India.

On the road to Kununurra, North-Western Australia, 2014, at the Pentecost River crossing of the Gibb River. We can have a lot of adventure riding within Australia now, as it's still roomy and has many outback dirt roads. This is about 3,000 kilometres north of where I live.

Out to Lunch, on Flickr. Thanh My Loi, district 2, the new Saigon. March 2019. Fuji X-H1 - 2.8/14. The mobile phone numbers chalked on the road are from
owners/brokers offering a lot for sale. The average shop house measures between 20m x 5m and my guess is that a lot in this area would sell for the equivalent of
approximately US$ 200.000.

I enjoyed the Afghanistan documentary Andreas. We were going to ride our motorbike from Europe to India in 1977 but decided against it. It would have been a big adventure, but risky. We had left it too late in the year.

Hi Andreas, I just had a look at the clip. A nice spread of the then current alternative life style. Have a look at this clip made by a friend who hiked in the Nepal mountains very many years ago. http://alongwalk.org/

thank you very much for that Peter!
Very beautiful landscape, people, specially kid's photos, and so very Nepalese! Very recommendable!!
As earlier said, I was surprised how little Nepal has changed since then. Well, Kathmandu did, and Pokhara, but little bit out of the cities and into the hills Nepal seems little changed. That said, last time I was in Nepal was 2014, but I used to go there every year ( for business ) since early 1990s and had visited first 1983. One thing I disagree, about the simple food, the Dal Bhat, that is rice and lentil soup. For me it's is great food! Similar to Beans and Tortillas in Mexico, Dal and Chapati in India, or pretty much anywhere I consider legumes and ( possibly whole grain ) grains to be the most common, simple, but also ecological, social and healthy food, I love it! One point worth taking: the path until the last airport from where to hike up towards Mount Everest was the more interesting culturally and enjoyable, from that point, to where most tourist fly, up, the atmosphere changed. - If interested in the people and culture, as visitor, it's often worthwhile to go to less known or less popular places!

John happy that you enjoyed it. Man, that would have been the time, Afghanistan at it's best! Not so sure how risky it would have been. Locals, that time, seemed to have been very helpful first of all. But sure better one schedules enough time and for the right season.
