Actually had to turn away from the screen multiple times to attempt to avoid crying, which ended up happening anyways. I have been living with my girlfriend and cat for five years, and am particularly moved by this story. I consider the cat a member of my family and can't even fathom having to say goodbye to him. This is truly a sad story, but one that I think is important to understand. Thank you for this post.
Cats are remarkable animals and we don't give them enough credit for their intelligence and loving nature (provided they are treated well). I have been though the sickness and death of a beloved cat and don't want to have to repeat it but I suppose I must as I have another little lady now and she is just as gentle and loving as the last one. Last night I went to the fridge and obviously knowing that's where meat is kept she came and sat at my feet and cried. As I only feed her raw meat now and then and had already fed her (dry food) for the night I said no and told her she could have some the next morning. First thing she did when she woke is ran to the kitchen and sat below the fridge crying again. I don't suppose she actually did understand and remember my words, but it certainly seemed as if she did. I love this little tyke like a child and losing her would tear my heart out. The essay was very moving as I understand only too well what great companions these animals are and how they get under your skin.
