One lens question

My favourite lens is an SLR lens (have more of those ;) ) and it is in many respects a so-so lens, enormous MFD, slow AF and lousy hood: Minolta 28-70/2.8G - love the colours and the OoF rendering:

I could live with just this lens :D

I would have a 40mm lens.

But for sure my combo right now is 50mm summar plus 28mm biogon.

Usually go out only with one of them.

I´d love to have a tri elmar MATE, but´s too expensive for the time being....hope voigtlander may do one like that.

The reflex zooms are too large and have poor optics...but i understand why people and lots of photojournalists use them.

I shoot with one lens all the time and then if I see a shot that I think would work better with one of the other lenses I have in my bag I stop and calmly change to that lens and take the shot then continue to survey the area for other possible shots.
Aren't I worried about not having the right lens or missing a shot(s) while changing lenses? Simple answer to this is NO. The way I look at it you're always going to miss shots I mean if you turn right at an intersection rather then left you're going to miss all the shots that you might have gotten if you'd turned left. If you go shooting in the morning you're going to miss all the shots you might have gotten if you'd gone in the afternoon or evening.
Exactly. But so many people want a "one size fits all" answer for each and every question they ask -- AND, it seems, to decide on the answer before they do anything.

Life is contingent. I recently learned that a good fried may be moving to the South Seas to take up a job that he didn't even know existed a year ago (he's still waiting for a final decision). And just under 33 years ago I met a young woman at a party rather over 5000 miles from where I lived and we've been married now for just under 32 years.

People who want everything cut and dried often condemn themselves to very dull lives.

Cheers,

R.

That's exactly what I wanted to say about it. I'm always shooting with one lens, until there is a reason not to be using that one. I haven't stuck permanently to just one lens since the time I bought a second one, and although I have a favorite to pick as my "one" lens (a Konica 35/2), I think if I suddenly lost the others I would be replacing them or getting similar ones as soon as I am able to.

So you married just one woman?

Was she closer to 35 or 50?

DCB; if you're using a similar signature at that other forum, you're likely already a bit suspect to them...:D

I have thought about the question and figured out what works for me.

These sorts of questions can sometimes devolve into people not only answering what they would choose but also pointing out to everyone else why any other choice is foolish at best and a crime against nature at worst. And in some extremes a personal insult as well.

Depends on the cam I use.

On my M8: Voigtländer Ultron 2/28
On my X-E1: Fujinon XF 1.4/35
On my Pentax K100D: That would be the 1.8/31 Ltd. (But I don't have that one.) :(
On my 5D: Leica Summicron-R 2/50 (But I have just sold my 5D.)
On my Nikon F: Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55
On my Pentax Spotmatic SPII: Mamiya Sekor 1.8/55
On my Ricoh KR-10x: Pentax-M 1.7/50
On my Lumix GF3: That would be the 1.7/20. (But I don't have that one.) :(
On my Nikon D1: MIR-24 2/35
On my Nikon1 V1: 1Nikkor 1.8/18.5
On my Nikon F-601: Nikkor 28-80
On my Leica IIIa: Leitz Summitar 2/5cm

etc. etc. etc...

It seems that I am a 50mm kind of guy. ;)

First question: No, there was one before that, but the marriage didn't take..

What on earth is the point of your second question, though? It strikes me as more rude (or possibly merely stupid) than offensive.

I can however point out that even you should be able to work out that she is now 33 years older than when I met her.

Cheers,

I think the OP Question was proposed at non-pro shooters...
I find as others, it really depends on what you photograph most of the time..
A landscape photographer will have different needs than a street photographer, or a bird photographer.

My needs are close to a Street and Urban photographer. So for me....
A my 18mm f/2 on my Fuji X-E2 is my go-to lens..
But, my 35mm /1.4 could also be substituted... I like both fov's (28/50)

I think MEP was using a Metaphor.... to a 35mm lens or 50mm lens... Still..... questionable ....

One lens? I'm still trying to settle on one manufacturer.

This made me laugh. Too close to home...

50mm would be my choice if I had to make one. Wide enough for street and landscape, close enough for a portrait.

Oh, and Roger. If a thread topic is pointless and meaningless to you, perhaps it would be best to not wade into battle. Your nearly 20K worth of postings should have provided you sufficient experience to know when to leave things alone. Unless your participation is simply to stir the pot.

Ah... could be. Thanks. If he was, he was missing my point completely. What I was pointing out is that life is contingent, and trying to guess what will happen next is pointless. The analogy between number of wives and number of lenses is so stretched that I really did not see it until you pointed it out.

Cheers,

There are times when it may be useful to point out that a particular line of inquiry may be pointless and meaningless to lots of people, and that they might do well not to be taken in by it.

If you could only have 1 lens what would it be and why?
Summicron 35mm ASPH because it works well for most of the things I photograph and I like the rendering. Sometimes I need a 28mm or 50mm but I can get by without them.

I know of photographers that have made a career with just one lens.
True, many great photographers have relied on one or two lenses. Some like simplicity, others like variety. Nothing wrong with either approach.

Are you being ironic? You won't find that here...

Recently I mounted 50mm lenses on all my cameras and I'm re-amazed at how this suits me. When I travel, it's always with one lens, and the fifty has bagged more good (to me) pics than anything else. When I get home I start putting together "kits" of many different FLs, but now I think I'm done. It's fifty for me.

35mm something.

A 35 1.4 of f2 would do me fine. The CV 35 1.2 is probably the most rounded lens I have ever used, but its a bit heavy.

I could use nothing but a 35mm for the rest of my life and not be unhappy.
