Hallo, I'll have one evening/night for myself (plane leaves at 07:20 next morning) in Zurich next week, any good suggestions for places to eat/drink/be merry?

I'll be taking my M2+40/1.4 and HP5+ so any suggestions for night shots would be appreciated too.

cheers,
kully

One member, Nksyoon, lives in Zurich, I believe.

I too, spent only a day in Zurich. I remember walking along the Niederdorfstrasse, where a lot of the restaurants and shops are. The river also offers some opportunities.

I felt my ears burning...

Hi Kully, as Clarence mentions there are plenty of takeaways, bars and restaurants along the Niederdorfstrasse which is in the old town just across the river from the main station. You can also pickup a free copy of Züritipp at the tourist office in the main station. Züritipp is a weekly events/entertainment guide published by one of the main newspapers - http://www.zueritipp.ch

Besides the Niederdorfstrasse, the other part of the old town across the river is also very picturesque. Lindenhofplatz overlooks the river and gives a good view of the city. The Fraumünster Church has beautiful stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall but is only open till 4pm on weekdays.

For more information, here's the Zurich tourism website: http://www.zuerich.com/

There's a couple of other Zurich RFF members who may want to add their local knowledge to this thread.

Thanks Clarence, Nick, what time do things close up of a night? I'm planning on wondering the streets / bars until it's time for my flight.

I've stayed in Basel and Interlaken before and they've been almost ridiculously safe at night - is Zurich cool too? Am I going to get arrested for taking photos in the middle of the night ? 😉

cheers again

Normal bars won't be open that late, but clubs might be open till the early hours.

Zürich is pretty safe, there shouldn't be any problem.

You won't be troubled taking photos at night unless it's an official building like a police station, or sometimes, if the security has nothing else to do, in the main station. A friend of mine was held for questioning because he was taking photos in the area of the state police headquarters.

Cheers nksyoon,

Well, I got back this morning. My plans of staying out all night taking photos were dashed by the extreme cold and the need to go to a bar every 20 minutes to warm up. I started at 5pm but by 11pm the cold was getting too much and I was getting too drunk - oh well.

Nice to see snow though, and I'd forgotten just how polite Swiss people are - a tram driver slowed down his tram for me as I was taking a photo!
