Only shooting JPG

Hi,

I'm new here (so apologies up front).

Bought a RD-1 today after seeing the many fine examples from users out there. Have a couple of teething problems which I didnt' see mentioned on the forum.

The first one is a bit strange. I shot a few images which looked ok, then a few in B&W and noticed a bunch of dead pixels. I ran the removed dead pixels option and everything looked good. However now I see that the camera is only shooting JPG images. This despite the only two options being RAW or RAW + JPG. It doesn't matter which option I select -- I only get JPG.

Secondly, I am on firmware version 1. I saw there was a version 2 (for windows) but when I try and install it I get an error 03 = wrong firmware version. I am on Windows 7.

Any help for either problem?

thanks
Guy

Check the dial on the top right. It should be pointing to R. If its pointing to one of the other two options, whatever menu RAW settings you have will not matter. To change value, use the rocker switch marked Q and iso, hold it pointed to Q, and rotate selector dial.

Bingo

Bingo

Fantastic. I must have changed it when I was trying to learn all the settings.

I didn't see this in the manual. Actually I don't have a manual but found something on the web -- but I still missed this.

What about a firmware update .. is the firmware for the RD-1 1.0?

I saw some of your images while browsing around. Wonderful colors, even though you mentioned something about wanting to shoot B&W.

If you want to shoot B&W do you use the camera settings or shoot color and then convert?

Is RAW the way to go for color (I searched on JPG in the forum but got no hits -- maybe the search engine ignores three letter search strings).

thanks again -- I was worried that I had a major problem.

Check out www.richcutler.co.uk for everything you could wish to know about the RD1 including the download for V2 firmware.

Shoot raw (or Raw + Jpeg) for best possible results and the option to have colour or B&W - you can set the cam to show B&W or colour on the rear screen when shooting raw.

Welcome to RFF. I followed your deliberations on dpreview - not surprised you ended up with an RD1.

Great camera - good luck.

My brain is going

Thanks. That was one of the first sites I read long before I got a RD-1 but somehow I missed all the links down the right hand side of the page .. I read just the main page.

Oh well ..

thanks for pointing it out to me.

And now I see that I actually have the RD-1S (it was advertised as a RD-1) so the firmware upgrade is irrelevant.

Regarding B&W. I have a 2.0 firmware on mine. I shoot B&W in camera with RAW+ JPG. In effect this means, since I use Apple Aperture's RAW processor and not EPSON's, that the JPEG are imported to the Mac as B&W, whilst the RAW files are still colour. I use the JPEG to preview what B&W may look like, and if I decide to keep the picture I process the RAW file (in most cases). But I must say, if I got the exposure right in camera, there is very little to complain about the JPEG files.

Hey Guy, Congratulations on your new R-D1!

You really stump me :D It looks, you and me have now more new toys sitting around, than being able, to freshly use them all ;-)

Enjoy the EPSON, it is a wonderful camera (but don't let the Leica collect dust now).

The site from Rich Cuttler was my very first place, to suck up all the details about the R-D1. Actually I opened up my sample a few hours after buying it and adjusted the rangefinder to my 50 Lux according the great information on Rich's site (big thanks for that).

You could shoot RAW and JPG, as many others do (very practical, as you don't lock yourself out with JPG only and still have the nice R-D1 BW files).

I can't help with the firmware - my old one came already fully updated.

Have fun,

Dirk

Lots of works of art (toys?)

Lots of works of art (toys?)

Hi Dirk,

Yes I have gone a little silly lately .. but really glad I added the RD-1 to the fun. I really like it. Everything seems so simple and it feels good in the hand. I also find it easier to focus than the M8 (which might be because of the problems with the 1.4/50 lens having a near focus but perhaps I lost a bit of confidence in my ability to focus the M8 .. I will have to see what happens.

I had bought a couple of CV lenses (15mm and 1.5/50) for which I lack IR filters, but they might be good for the RD-1. It also came with a super nice 2.8/25mm Zeiss ZM lens.

I am very happy with my M8 but it might be the first to go. I like everything about the camera except the IR filters.

I dreamed last night that Zeiss announced a Zeiss Ikon ZM FF digital and that I had bought it. I was a bit sad this morning to find out that it was a dream.

I think that the focus on my RD-1 is good .. but I will test it some more when the sun comes out again (hopefully this year). I took some shots indoors at 1600 iso and while they are good in B&W the color was just to noisy for what I wanted.

Not sure of the best size images to post here, but here is one of my son .. his tooth had just fallen out and he was looking mean. This is when i discovered the dead pixels. CV 1.5/50 wide open.

regards
Guy

Guy, that is a great moment captured - your son will be happy, when he is older, you shot this.

I found out so far, shooting color in high ISO with the R-D1 really is better done with RAW. Strangely you don't get the white pixels then and you are able, to work much nicer on the shadows and some details, if needed.

At ISO 1600, the R-D1 (understandably) develops some ugly color shifts in the shadows, which is why I am too lazy to work on these photos in color and just shoot it as BW film, which looks great in the details.
I made an experiment of pushing an extremely underexposed shot from ISO 1600 to over 25000 and the fine grain looks absolutely gorgeous in the original file. It really has this fine detailed fibre grain look from film, much different from the regular digital noise blotches. Too bad, I don't know, how to display this on the web with compressed JPGs.

Regarding your new M8, I would not shoot so fast. Keep it for a while if you can. It surely has some advantages over your other cameras, you might learn to like.
For me, it would be, that:
- it feels very much like the Leica M film bodies opposed to the more "cluttered" design of the R-D1 (which operates great - I love especially the shutter wind after each shot),
- it does 10MP files for bigger enlargements or cropping,
- it has no AA filter for possibly more detail under certain circumstances

Actually, I am looking now for an additional M8 mostly for these reasons. The R-D1 made me weak to the digital rangefinder thing. The crop factor is also not so bad.

Actually my 50 lux would be a bit shorter again and better usable than with the EPSON ;-)
