open discussion - iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

... the iPhone, is not a camera. I would no more buy an iPhone specifically because it has a camera than I would buy a Leica M9 because it has a clock in it. I can use the camera, and the clock, when I need it, but neither is the primary purpose of the device.

Capisco?

Makes me wonder what I've been making pictures with for the past 4 years, publishing to the Web or in print.

Apple is the biggest company in the world because it avoided thinking linearly...it's not Either/Or, anymore. Capisco?

Respectfully disagree. There's all kinds of paths up the same mountain.

I think he was expressing his opinion. I tend to agree with him... if I have a more versatile camera with me (and I always do), why should I use the iPhone camera? You might have a reason to, but I don't. The iPhone is a computer with multiple functions, not specifically a camera. This is not a judgement regarding the quality of its camera function.

Smartphones are miniaturized tricorders. Astounding little machines that combine the merits of a good camera (say, half-frame 35mm with better low-light sensitivity), a movie camera, a good computer, a telephone, a teletype, a ticker-tape, universal library, a chronometer, compass, altimeter, level, sextant… and, of course, the ability to spy on your every move.

Wondrous and frightening devices.

To say they're not the same thing is a factual statement, and it clearly isn't factual. That's all I'm saying (again, respectfully).

... and a flashlight ... I just want to plug it into my mac and have a hassle-free update

I have the 4s and my son has the 4 -- we're both getting the 6. This will be a 3g to 4g improvement. In addition the latest operating systems (my son switched and it slowed down his phone). Also, getting a new phone will address approaching failures of battery and other components. Will sell the out-of-contract phones. My son doesn't want the 6 plus because he feels it's too big to easily fit in pockets. I'm concerned the glass around the edges will be a possible damage problem. I think the phone can make wi-fi calls -- and that's good. I wish an iPad could be a phone -- so we didn't need an iphone and could just have an iPad/phone. As for the camera -- don't really care. However, to carry less when out shooting I use my iPhone as an exposure meter and like being able to see a visual of the exposure the phone/meter is suggesting.

Looks like I'm one of the few that doesn't want a large phone...but I'll get the 4.7 iPhone because the iPhone is the device I've used more than all other devices combined...not to say it is perfect or that other devices (cameras etc) don't get used a lot, just not as much as the iPhone for everything from phone calls, emails, texts, and yes the occasional photo and game:)

Some of the features on the 6 are going to be great...faster (a/c) Internet connections, apple pay, any improvement in the camera is welcome, faster cpu is always talked about as no big deal, but once you upgrade, you cannot imaging going backwards :), yes, I feel like ATT is holding me up, no I don't mind spending the money that goes to apple - on a per hour of use, the iPhone is the cheapest thing I've ever owned !!! :) :) :)

Many of my colleagues in engineering were openly puzzled when I brought a Polaroid Spectra to the World Wide Developers Conference. "Why not just use your iPhone?" they asked.

"I do that too," I said. And then I made portraits of them, of their friends, of OUR friends with the Spectra, scanned them, and gave them a link to a book.

After that they understood, and now they ask me if I'm bringing "a real camera" to take pictures at their get togethers. Why? Because everyone there has an iPhone and all of their photos look like camera phone pictures. When I bring a real camera ... be it Polaroid or Leica M9; Hasselblad, Sony A7 or Minox C ... the photos I make are different than snapping those photos with a cell phone.

Just because an iPhone has a camera in it does not make it a camera. It can be used as one, but I wouldn't pick an Android thing over an iPhone thing because the camera in the Android thing is "better" ... they're both too limited to be worth using as a decision point IMO, and they're both good enough nowadays for snapshots and incidental documentarian recording purposes.

There are too many other things about smartphone devices that are more important to me to decide that the built-in camera is the reason to buy one or the other.

I look forward to the iPhone 6. I've been quite happy with my 4S and don't feel it's obsolete yet, but the inevitable grind of forward progress means that it's best to keep current with these devices/tools/computers/phones/etc. Meanwhile, my now-ancient Olympus E-1 and even more ancient Polaroid Spectra—and all my other "real" cameras—continue to perform as the excellent cameras that they are.

Along with all the other advancements...My eyes are getting old. The 5.5" screen will be most welcome!
Seriously... this is a real consideration.
I still use a 4s and will keep it as my travel phone. It's a great device and far from obsolete.
Buying a 25CHF credit and installing a SwissCom chip is just way too easy when it's time to visit family in Switzerland/Europe. The smaller phone will be great when the Laptop is in tow anyway.
The 6+ will be more of a bridge to a laptop. Never did adopt an iPad although I got one for my Mom and a GF. They love em.
The 6+ looks like t will be the "mini" many of us have waited for.
Cheers!

For me, it is that I can't type on that tiny screen... or at least type the way i want to. I'm hoping the bigger screen helps with that.

I won't know until I have one in my hands to work with a bit, but the 6+ *might* be a viable all-in-one device ... phone and pad together. But it's hard to say that a 5.5 inch screen is going to compete successfully against a similar resolution 7" screen for reading a book and looking at photos.

I bought the iPad 2 when it came out and liked it but found it somewhat too large for my druthers most of the time. I bought an iPad mini when it came out and find that it's just right—I use it all the time, have it with me all the time. It is my most used computer other than for image processing and my needs for book development and production at work. (I'm writing this note on it even as I say this ...).

Because the iPhone 4S is small, it's handy to have with me as a telephone, a txt/email message handler on the go, a calendar book, a respository of music I listen to in the car and at my desk, occasionally to snap a photo, etc. I don't know that a larger phone will be as convenient for those purposes, or whether it will be big enough to make a comfortable device for reading books and watching films when I'm traveling.

And then there's the Watch. So many options...

First world problems - which phone to get?

After 24 hours of thinking too much about this and even printing out the correct sized mockups of the 6 and 6+, I have some more thoughts.

the 6+ is big, hard to see how one handed texting will be as trouble free as on the 5/5s or 4s. The 6+ on its side, is slightly longer than a Leica MP, the same height, and much thinner of course. This will make the printed Leica phone-back decals true to life!

Not sure whether the 6+ will support iPad apps, or whether the developers will port the iPad version to the 6+. For example I use ArtStudio on the iPad mini, they do have an iPhone version, but the iPad version is much easier to use.

the discussion about whether it is a camera or not is pretty silly - like someone pointed out , the iPhone is the most popular camera on flickr - more to the point, the 4 most popular cameras on flickr are iPhones. it makes images and is a camera, just a multi-tool instead of a dedicated camera.

I'll need to get cargo pants to carry the 6+
and making a call on it will feel a little like pulling out a WWII radio from a backpack

the battery life should be great.

I think what I really want is something the size of the 5/5s with twice the battery life, the A8 processor, NFC chip and an upgraded camera

I've already given my 5s to a family member and still on the fence as to which to get.

This morning was all in for the "go big or go home" 6+
this afternoon thinking maybe the 6

child #2 had a great idea, get both and give the one you don't want to someone you love (him)

It was about time Apple got a good sized screen. I own a Sony Xperia Z, I will never get a smaller screen.
Btw, now I understand the lure of the iPad Mini, you guys were still using those small iPhones.....

Overall when I upgraded to the iPhone 5S I was disappointed with the camera. Image quality was OK but my old Galaxy SIII was better. There were other issues I was not fond of such as no micro SD expansion capabilities but I used it and made the best of it.. The biggest issue I had was setting up Office 365 for a very important email account I needed daily access to but was finally able to get done.. On the Android it was as simple as using OWM.

When not carrying my DSLR or film cameras I like to use the camera phone for those images that would otherwise get away so that is an important part of the overall package for me.. But since the iPhone 6 did not do much to improve the quality I have decided to go with the Galaxy S5 when I buy out my contract next month. I've seen the quality of this camera/phone and it blows my iPhone out of the water..

For those who are not picky like me I'm sure the iPhone 6 will work fine for you..

Having both the iPhone 5c and a Nexus 4, I would go with the 6. I do think the 4.7" size is just a bit easier to work with. But then I have big hands.

And both fit in whatever pocket I try to put them in. While personally I wouldn't go as large as the 6+, I do see a lot of Samsung Notes in my travels, so there is a market for a device that size. Especially for those who can only afford one device. Most of us here likely have a phone and a tablet.

I got the 6, it's very nice, thin and smooth , slippery in fact. I need a wrist safety strap like the wii-mote's

Screen is great. haven't tested the camera yet, will do that on the way home.
one handed operation is functional, but easy to lose grip of the thing in a busy env. def need a case or stick'um

as opposed to the 1000's of people lined up at Apple, I went to a t-mobile store near work, got there ar 7:55, they opened at 8, I was out the door with phone at 8:07

I got the iPhone 6+ yesterday and I don't really know what to think.
It's definitely not a 1-handed phone which is a problem as I need my other hand holding onto the handles in the trains for 2 hours every day. There's a handy "double tap" feature that brings the top of the screen down for easier access. My problem is that I can't really hit the other and of the screen. I hold the phone in my left and using my left thumb I can't hit the bottom right corner of the screen unless I move the phone around in my palm a little.

I am pretty certain that this is going to be the first phone I ever drop into a toilet bowl or somewhere equally unpleasant.

The phone itself is fantastic otherwise, the usual Apple built quality, none of the plasticy monkey business from other makes.

Since this is a camera forum, I should say that I tried it and I find it on par or slightly better than the iPhone 5. Since I was 100% satisfied with that one, i am happy with the new model too. Haven't tried the new features like time lapse etc, not sure how much I'd use that anyways.

Cheers,
Ben

Well, I got my 6 (not plus)...all I can say is that it's typical iPhone great. I'm totally happy with all of the new features except one thing: IT'S TOO DAMN BIG

I'm pining for my 5s but won't give up the new features...what's a fella to do???
