Opinion how to get rid of fungus?

Hello guys, I landed myself a Canon 7 about $100 including shipping, but to my horror is has fungus in and around the shutter curtain and some in the viewfinder too 🙁

I have no idea you can get fungus on the metal shutter curtain!

I'm asking for opinion because if I were to send it back it would cost me almost half just for the postage, so I'm pondering options and if its actually worth while to strip and clean it up.

I am paranoid if the following point hold true:
1. it has fungus infestation, even if I wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol, I will still risk it transfer to my lens and my film.

2. cleaning the viewfinder risk remove "coating" of rangefinder hence destroy the viewfinder patch.

3. isopropyl alcohol dont kill fungus spore, it only kills the "growing" ones.

If any of the above hold true, especially the second point, I guess I would have to suck it up, send it back and take it as a lesson.

Put it back in the box and return it.

If it is eBay, make a "not as described" request and get your money back.

Wash your hands after packing.

If you search the net for removing fungus from camera lens , etc you will be armed with enough info to confirm your thoughts on what to do with the camera. Peter

I think for Canon-7, any exposed glass surface in the viewfinder is not afraid of alcohol washing, since Canon-7 uses projected frame line, so unlike Canon-P it's not that easy to ruin the viewfinder. (For finders like the one on P you need to be careful not to wipe out the half mirror coating.)

I had fungus on my 7 and I just dosed some alcohol and rubbed. I don't know how to deal with it if they are growing in between glass surfaces in the viewfinder, but fortunately mine didn't have.

I agree with Photomoof...send it back for a full refund..

A lot of people think fungus removal is as simple as cleaning the area with whatever internet approved method of cleaning but it will just come back...

The fungus will most likely exist throughout the camera, at least to some extent. It can be in places hidden from view (internal component, lubricants, leather covering, ...). Cleaning the visible fungus is only a short term solution. Any remaining fungus will spread.

thanks for all the input guys, I'll check with the seller + post office + custom for steps to arrange for a return. this sucks... all the time, could have spend on taking picture instead of frustration 🙁

moral of the story: pay cheaper (it's not even cheap), pay many time, end up paying more!

You could bath it in H2O2 but I'm not sure how brass etc. reacts to it.
The spores live of fat and dust so they can spread everywhere.

The only way you could kill fungus in camera for sure is complete CLA. Like taking apart and soaking it in homemade fungus killing solution.
I have done it with FED-2, not for fungus, but due to old grease.
But "In Viewfinder" doesn't sounds as easy fix.
Return or ask for partial return and trash it.
