Or what ??
I recently bought a very nice hexar. I shot a test roll of fuji HQ100 12 shot just to check the focus etc. After that i shot a roll of bluefire police film, my favorite new B+W film followed by E100G. I have been shooting E100G for a while in 6x7 and 4x5 and always found it fine for those formats, but normally I drum scan at 2000-2500 dpi.
Now i have a Minolta 5400II which is a super sharp scanner and I thought I would try to get back into 35mm color film.
Scanned the HQ100 at 5400 dpi and got about what I expected.
Scanned the Bluefire at 5400 and got what I expected, which is super sharp and very detailed in comparison. This particular photo should be resolving around 80lp/mm.
When I scanned the E100G at 5400 dpi, I got what I have always gotten out of it and that is at higher resolutions a somewhat softish scan IMO.
Up until now I thought the weak point was my camera lenses but after these scans I am thinking E100G is a bit over hyped for resolution and probably closer to 65lp/mm film than a true 80 as advertised.
I guess I woke up when I compared my E100G crop to the HQ100 crop and found them to be about the same as far as sharpness. All these test rolls were shot with multiple shots varying mostly between F4 and F8.
These scans are of the sharpest images, manual scanner focus and no sharpening. Gem was applied to the HQ100 shot. Its pretty grainy film.
E100G, HQ100 and Bluefire. These are 1/4" crops.
Any opinions on UC100. I have used UC400 and like it, but how does UC100 compare to the top films like provia 100, velvia etc.
