I have a Leica IIIa w/Summar f-2 50mm and I do not have the Leica widget that allows the use of filters with it. Nor do I really want to first find and then pay probably too much for such a device. What I have in mind is a lot simpler. I have a regular Leica front lens cap that came with the lens from KB. I have found a filter adapter that adapts up to 49 mm ( which I have an abundance of at present). This adaptor's back side id fits snugly around the slightly raised ring around the lens cap.

What I have in mind to do is to drill out the lens cap to that raised edge and then use a super tough epoxy we have at work to bind the two together. I will micro scuff both bonding edges for a good tight bond. And then screw on what ever filter I choose and pop the lens cap on when needed.

Has any one tried this or other ideas to use a filter on the sm 50mm without the Leica widget?

I use step-up adaptors to use Series 6 filters with both my 50mm/3.5 Elmar and my 50mm/2.0 Summitar. A lot of old-time camera stores probably have accumulated slip-on adaptors of this type.

I took a new but defective A-36 skylight filter and removed the glass. I then used a 39-49mm step-up ring to fashion an adapter that will clamp onto the lens via the original A-36 mount and accept 49mm filters, hoods etc. It works very well. I once posted pictures of it here but got no interest so I left it at that. A better looking adapter may be a 39-46mm step-up ring or a 40.5-46mm step-up ring. I used 49mm because of the availability of the accessories as opposed to 46mm.

Here's the picture again.

I may go a similar route to that yet. I own a lathe and I was also thinking of turning a piece of aluminum round stock that would perform the same task as the A36 filter ring does in your design and attaching the filter adaptor to that. But after thinking about it for a bit it seemed that with as tight as the lens cap went on I could use that and not have to mess with the tapping and threading of the tightening screw like the A36 system uses. I like making things on the lathe. I like tapping and threading a good deal less.

Thank you for showing me your design. I may end up there yet.
