Opting for Voucher Instead of Replacing Corroded M9 Sensor

Part of me says keep shooting till it become unbearable (might be there already), saving up to step up. When you hit the unbearable you see if you have enough cash, if not get-her-fixed.

This is a way of selling new cameras. The voucher does not do much, if you have to buy the other camera brand new. Pretty much they are giving up their profit and selling a new product. I will keep my M9 if it gets sensor corrosion again. It took three months last year, I am sure I can wait for the new sensor if the one the put goes bad. M9 is a great camera.

Price was a big factor when I bought the M9. I bought an M3 six months before the M9 so I didn't have much cash to go digital.

As far as detecting corrosion, the Leica rep told me spots that look like dust but have white centers indicate a problem. I called them today and was told their customer service department was in training so I have to call them tomorrow.

I think the voucher/trade in program means I give them the M9 and $3,750 and i get the M-P. Not 100% on that so don't quote me.

Popflash has M262's for $4,488 with warranty. You could get your M9 fixed and sell it for 3K. Cost to upgrade to a 262: $1,488 or just keep the M9. Leica's deal on the M-P upgrade doesn't seem that good. I'm a big fan of the 262. See my review at http://jimarnold.org/blog/2015/12/leica-m-typ-262/

If you got a clean M9 for $2k that's a hell of a good deal. I sold my M-E a few months back for $3,400. Just get the M9 fixed and use it. You can probably shoot with it for 2 years and still sell it for $2k.

Yes, that's what it looked like with my M9 before I sent it in. I opted for the trade up to the M-P and I'm very glad I did. I had an ambiguous relationship with the M9, nearly sold it several times. It seemed a camera that almost made the grade to me, but was just slightly off in several particulars. The typ 240 bodies solved all the things that seemed slightly off.

Of course, knowing what I know now after a year and a half of M-P ownership and a few weeks of M-D typ 262 ownership, if the same opportunity happened to me today I would eschew the M-P and go for the M-D. Its simplicity and "to the point" basic feature set are exactly what I have wanted in a digital M since 2001 and its lack of LCD and control buttons leaves the body beautifully unadorned with tricksy things that I hit by accident; it's very easy to handle. But that's my now-informed personal preference speaking.

What do you expect the voucher to do other than permit you to buy a new camera at a reduced price to replace your old one that has a problem?

When I took the update/upgrade offer and bought the M-P, the voucher effectively gave me a little better than market value for an excellent condition M9, despite its sensor problem, as trade-in against a new model that presumably doesn't have the sensor problem*and has many other improvements that I wanted. For me, it was a good deal so I went for it.
