To paraphrase Ansel Adams' observations in "The Negative," you really don't need an orange. A yellow is almost a "correction" filter for the average b&w film, and usually results in natural looking tonal renditions. An orange crosses the line and starts to make things look "unnatural, dramatic, etc." Maybe you like this effect, but if so, the red does a better job of it -- darkening skies and water, cutting through haze, and such. I think I have an orange somewhere in my filter collection, but I never use it.

Joe, I really like the orange filter. It's effect is stronger than a yellow (on clouds and blue skies) but not as dramatic as a red filter is.
Like Mike said, it's more than a correction to a neutral tone rendition, but not as dramatic as a red.

I think that is it. It isn't the going to be an often used filter, but it does have its place. I always carry one for those times it it the best choice, albeit that isn't often.
