OT: Are we back to "somewhat" normal now?

Just curious as the site was out (for me at least) for most of the day. I could ping the IP addy just fine so it's not a concern regarding connectivity; my guess would be that it's got everything to do with the DB.

Did we move to a new server?

I'm exhausted with this stuff, I'm not leaving RFF but I'm backing up and moving stuff to Flickr as a redundancy. What started as a hobby here is evolving in a way that down time is no longer an issue that I can dismiss.

Access to RFF's site over the last couple of weeks have been terrible.

Good point.

A lot of my first Gallery posts were "cropped" JPEGs from RAW files that I had not saved in the lower format.

I'd have to re-do those.

I saved my later Gallery JPEG uploads on my external HD so have those available.

I've had a Flickr account for awhile but never used it - maybe it's time?

I moved most of my gallery photos elsewhere too, however I'm not enamoured with the way that site handles compression. It can be inconsistent and it always seems as though something is going on there too.

Flickr seems to be the overwheming choice for everyone. I too, signed up a long time ago but never used it.

Why does it come out on top of the other sites? No downtime? Doesn't butcher the jpeg compression? I'm curious. It's a pain in the neck to move a lot of photos, but I'd do it again if Flickr is that good.

I use Expressions as a Gallery / Blog.

$3 a month.

And you can use your own domain name if you wish. Like mine in the signature below.

Now.. that being said; not everyone has the know-how or time to do such a thing and I think that's where the problem lies.

There are a number of ways of doing it with a number of free open source programs out there.

I use Simple Viewer on my wedding/portrait site and it seems to be pretty good imho; but I wouldn't use it as a gallery per se. Gallery or Coppermine seems to be fairly popular but I'm curiuos if you need to know PHP in depth.

I have some knowledge in PHP.. and can follow along with the basic syntax since I know ASP... and mySQL usually has a web interface if it's set up by a web host. $10 or less a month for that 🙂

I use siteframe, that's what contaxg.com runs on.
For some other sites I've set up gallery 1 and 2.

I'm currently translating my Siteframe to german, which is a lot of work since most text is hardcoded in the templates and I'll add fotokasten as a print services later.

I share a "shop in shop" at fotokasten with a friend, so we can sell prints at our prices, fotokasten gets the normal printing costs and a brokerage fee for credit card payments.

You don't need PHP or MySQL knowledge to set up Gallery, Gallery 1 doesn't even need a database.
Same with Siteframe although some MySQL may help there.
