There has been a fair amount of discussion on another thread regarding affinity to cameras and going out fishing. We all have shots of our prize catch so we know what a fish looks like with a proud fisherman smiling as it is released or on held on a stringer.

One of the reasons I fish is just to reconnect to the non urban world. It takes me to places that are often wild and peaceful. I like that and from time to time I take a shot of a stream or a sunset on water but it is based on my camera being in my pocket and while I'm fishing.

I'm wondering if there is any interest in putting together a summer project of landscape / waterscape, weather, or whatever shots taken while out fishing but not shots of the catch.

If we can get 5 - 10 interested it would be fun to see what each other have for home water or special situations seen while on the water and that is any kind; fresh or salt water. Maybe posting the first week of September for all to reminisce about the season.

If interested just put an 'interested' post on this thread and we will see come September what we have.

cheers, Jan

Seeing as how you're around some excellent scenery and water in the Smokies and the Atlantic shore you should be on this 'like a dog on a bone' .

Give it a shot. there's 2 months what the heck 🙂

Well, some of these are of fish caught, but there are some 'scene setting' shots too.

I love offshore fishing. I have a 25' catamaran and we fish the gulf stream about 60 miles off Jacksonville, Florida.

Hi Tom

I like the shot of the reel; middle photo, left side. What is it a Penn? I can't tell.

When Sept comes you should have some shots of salt fishing, mangroves, turtle grass, surf and sand, morning sunrises etc. Think about it.

If I ever can find that old stick (more like a tree's branch) with fishing line, and can untangle the whole lot, I might just give it a try. But don't count in it too much. 😛

If this is still open - I would love to participate in this!

you know what they say - "that's why it's called fishing and not catching"... 😉

All those reels are Avets. Avet is a fairly new reel. I sold my Penn Internationals two years ago and went with Avet. The Penn's were excellent reels but required way too much maintenance. These Avets are pretty much bulletproof and have better drags to boot.

Hmm, you guys seem to be serious about. OK, maybe excvept Remy🙂
We (me and my father) only have cheap Silstar's and Cormoran's. And some brand-less 25 year old huge reel from the czech republic.

True, it was good enough for my father to catch several big beasts like, a carp of 8 kg and a catfish over 30 kg.

My record is, so far, a pike of 3.5 kg. Man that had a scary big mouth.

I've never been fishin' in salt water. Must be a different experience.

Hi Pherdinand, RML, MrBuhl, Tom if you are in and Joe Friday is too we have 5 players. That would be enough to do this, if more subscribe that's good too.

Remember it's not about the shot of a fish for "braggin' rights" the intent is to show what happens around the water that you fish in. So it doesn't matter what type of fishing you do as long as it is recreational and not on a commercial trawler (that's another topic I think).

The idea is just to photograph something that appeals to you while you are out fishing. Maybe even still life shots of an old tackle box, your friend fishing, a boat that you like; all shots showing some of the water where the fishing is taking place.

So if you are comfortable with that lets take some shots on the water over the summer and post in September. The nice thing is we don't have to worry about who has the largest fish to show, because there should be no "trophy shots" for this gallery.

I'm going to leave the thread up and we can see if we get others coming in. As they say at the start of the Grand Prix, "gentlemen/ladies load your cameras" smile/joke

this is exactly what I had planned to do this summer, between my brother and myself.. sort of a photo journal of our fishing escapades.. unfortunately, we haven't had much time to fish, especially together, so there isn't much to show so far.. but I'm planning to shoot everything from gearing up at the car.. walking the trails to the water.. flies on the water.. facial expressions after 'the big one that got away'.. etc.. just the details that add up to a day of fishing.. I might even take a picture or two of fish at some point

I love fly-fishing...so do my mom and dad. I know you are not looking for trophy type pictures, but here is one nonetheless...here is my mom with the trout she caught back in March. Normally we are catch and release, but we decided to have this one for dinner.

Stuart,

very nice to have a trout for dinner. Especially with a few potatoes, some shallots and a baguette to wipe up after. Almost forgot, maybe something to wash it down?

regards, Jan

To everyone on this thread; we have about 10+ participants. I'll post a list in a couple of days for reference and then ask Joe to put a sticky up in the projects area.

BTW: don't forget to have fun, catch a fish, and don't drop your camera in the drink!

I'm In. My son and I go fishing out of San Diego every summer at least once. He's 15 now, we've been going for 5 or 6 summers now. We've always gone on little 1 day trips, catching yellowtail and sandbass, but this IS the year we're going out for albacore, on a longer 2 day trip. The kid can barely contain himself. I've brought my camera in past trips, took a few shots of the catch etc., but this year I'll try and illustrate the trip for you all.
