Here's the question. The iphone looks good. My friend got one and I'm surprised how small it is, and how well it works. I think I'll get one in 6 months or so.
So if you've $600 to spend, what would you get? a planar or an iphone?

Yup. I'll surely get the iphone later this year (probably around christmas). But I think I'll get the $499 version, saving the $100 for 25 rolls of tri-x!

The lens of the two, But I would go for a fast Nikkor or two and the rest on bulk film and chemicals. Oh but theres always a couple of nights in another place.

The phone will be obselete in less than one year and probably dead within three. The lens will still work after 50 years.
I say this as the guy with the sexy red iPod Nano. What a hypocrite, eh?

Lets's see, for $600, I could get a Bessa of some sort, any number of digital cameras, and some M mount lenses. Why would I want to get rid of my $49 cell phone to get an overpriced toy that would only make Steve Jobs richer?
Now when the iPhone sells for $99, I'll think about it. especially if they lower the monthly plan to less than the $40 I'm paying now.
Some people seem to have more money than sense, but hey, as long as it's YOUR money, knock yourself out...

A Planar wouldn't make any sense since I don't have a camera to put it on.

Or in my case, the free phone provided by my employer. I don't make many personal calls, so any expenditure of my own money for phones seems like a waste to me.
On the news tonight, they showed a bunch of guys camped out waiting in line to get the new iphone; some had been there for days. I wonder - how do they afford a $600 phone when all they do is goof off and camp on the sidewalk for days?

I think the iPhone is rather neat. Overpriced? Too mega-trendy? That's what they said about the RAZR. (And the original iPod: "That much money for a digital music player? Mr. Jobs needs to put that crack pipe down for keeps!") The only two things I have against the iPhone's current incarnation are, in order of importance, (1) AT&T as sole carrier, and (2) no Bluetooth; I'm a recent convert to BT earsets, and I like them. A lot.
But, really, I'd take the lens first. Not a 50, though...I love my M-Hex too much.

You forgot to mention the extra $2000 a year to use it. So that $600 camera/ipod/phone/etc will in reality cost you $2600+ for the first year..
So I'll stick with my Samsung phone that lets me check my email and talk for a lot less and spend the money on other things that I really need..

Roland Rocks!
And/or a 50mm M-Hexanon lens to put on the Hexar RF body.
But that would put you over the $600 budget, Wayne.
Yes, and your point is?
You're asking the wrong folks.

Thanks for all your replies. I started this thread for fun, and I'm not surprised that most of you prefer to get the planar (or a lens).
still think i'll get the iphone later this year, though.
