I'd get the iPhone, but living in VT I cannot use it as a phone, and I already have an ipod, so I am having to wait. My Sony phone is such a p.o.s. that I'd 'switch' in a heartbeat.

If the *materials* in any given product cost a manufacturer $200 and it sells for $499 NOBODY is making money. That would hardly be the example of someone making a big return on an investment. The standard operating procedure in an unrelated industry I work in is parts/labor times FIVE for retail list price. If an Iphone cost $200 to build, which is pretty impossible for me to believe since they are making a billion of them, but if it did cost that much there's no way you could buy one for $500, they would be much much much more expensive.
It may cost joe blow $200 to purchase those parts onesey twosey to DIY his own iphone, but when you purchase components in mass quantities, price breaks are tremendous. A capacitor might cost $1 a piece but when you buy them in the 10,000 quantites, that price drops to cents.
It would be my guess that those phones are probably in the $80 range, assembled. I also dont understand why americans are so gullible to hype, I was in Europe this spring and everyone had a similar type of phone, not made by apple. You'd think apple invented the pda or something the way the sheep are grazing on this one...

If you wanna something good you better buy an HTC or at least a Nokia, unless you are in fashion world, why buy and 2,5 G Phone when you can have 3,5 G version everywhere (HTC and Nokia).
By the lens, any lens in fact! BTW Apple is doing a 51% profit on the iPhone.... but will come down...and in Europe it's better be 3G iPhone at minimum...

I'm not a big cell phone user. Been using cell phones since 1999, all phones I've got were presents, or used ones. The best phone I've had is the one I have now. it's a Nokia N70, Symbian OS, it has a lot of goodies. Guess what?. I only use it as a phone/sms device. All the fancy stuff it can do get almost unused. I can see movies in the phone, I have "The Sting" and "The matrix" in my 2GB card, but I prefer watching them on my TV. I can browse the internet, but it's a pain to do it with a phone keyboard and screen. For me it's just another phone, and that's what I want it to do.
Maybe I'm not a fan of portable devices. I don't like Ipaqs or blackberries. I have an Ipaq and it's gathering dust after a month of use, and it's worth nothing today (it was a present too). I hate laptops. Their keyboards suck. The only portable device I use, apart from the phone, is a MP3 player, hard disk based. I don't like Apple either (or Mac OS fot that matter, I'm a linux man). Overpriced stuff that looks "k00l". I can't understand why people like Ipods so much. ITunes??. YUCK. I'll buy an Iaudio X5 by Cowon anyday instead of an Ipod, more features, better audio quality, same price. A friend of mine has had 3 Ipods while my Archos Gminis XS202 MP3 player keeps working great, is smaller and have 20GB.
What I'm trying to say, is that if you like gadgets, get the Iphone. I don't. I get bored pretty quickly with this little tech gizmos.
It's just my point of view about technology. I know that a lot of people love this things. I can't remember how much money my cousin has spent over the last 10 years in some expensive gadgets, that are now beautiful doorsteps
In the meantime, I'll keep saving for a Planar, that I want to buy as my second, and last in quite some time lens for my M6, the first one being a Jupiter 12
.
Cheers.

xabi said:So if you've $600 to spend, what would you get? a planar or an iphone?
Dude, how can you compare these, the other is a phone and other one is a camera lens, haha...
What would you get;
-21mm biogon lens
-new Cannondale racing road bicycle
-handmade Kendo bogu set?
I can't decide

"handmade Kendo bogu set" -- I don't even know what that is.
As for the Cannondale, I'm sure they're nice bikes, but they just don't do it for me esthetically.

Coming from someone who owned a MDA (aka HTC Wizard), I can attest that the iPhone is leaps & bounds ahead. And the Wizard (or the newer 3g vers, which is ultimately the same) is one of the better smart phones out there. The iPhone is simply a joy to use - even my 83 year old grandma found it impressive. Yeah, it doesn't have "all" the bells & whistles, but, well, my M4 doesn't have a motor drive or AF....

humm...iPlanar, what a question!!!
on a side note, am I the only one wishing for a cellphone build like a M3 or FM? solid Metall, basic num keyboard, weather proof and small display(you guys remember the old red-calculator displays...that one)...no gee-wiz-internet- blueberry shiat, no not even SMS!! only phoning with battery life of 1 month and the ability to knock someone out with it ;-)...THEN I would get a cell phone!

This is wayyy offtopic, but yeah I actually agree: I don't like the look of Cannondale road bikes. I prefer traditional italian style bikes...Colnagos etc. And this is Kendo bogu

I agree with that. But, basically, I don't get the question: iphone or planar? tie or pen? TV or shoes? That doesn't make any sense to me. Planar or Summicron? Biogon or Summaron 2.8? I can understand those questions.
Anyway, I would not waste a penny for an iphone. Last time I bought a mobile, the seller showed me the hightech phones with camera, video, MP4, internet, visio, TV ... etc. I said I have already a camera, a TV, a video cam, a PC ... I just need something which I can call with and receive phone call. I can't forget his face when I said that ... I was dying of laughter inside. I ended with a 15€ mobile which I'm happy with.
My two cents.

ywenz said:It totally boggles my mind why Apple partnered up with the worst cell provider in the US. If iPhone ran on the Sprint network, the money Appple is asking for would be much more well spend!
There's a story here, from today:
http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/SprintDumpingCustomers.aspx
...that says that Sprint got tired of hearing complaints about its service, so it fired 1,000 of its customers; to make a point, I guess. Complain to us, and you'll lose your phone service...wonder what's going to happen to those people and their long-standing phone numbers? Doesn't mean that Sprint's service is necessarily bad, as long as you keep your mouth shut.
I've just come through a long illness in the family, and carried a cell phone for almost two years. Now that's done with, and I'm pretty much done with the cell phone. I was down at the Apple store over the weekend, buying a new keyboard, and handled an iPhone -- it's not that small. The phone that I carried was about half the size, I guess. On the other hand, the web browsing demonstration was pretty impressivbe. I guess if you are a business traveler, they'd be good...but the people I saw buying them pretty much didn't look like business travelers. They looked like guys from Comp USA.

Man, I just read that article about sprint and thats totally awesome. They credited people, the whole thing seems pretty win win, seems odd they'd get a bad rep for doing something that responsible. Hell, I wish every one I had a contract with would just let me go if I complained one time too many.
