OT - Internet bill in the U.S.

I am against anything that MoveOn is for, without reading any further. Their lies and mistruths are well-known, they are filled with hatred for the country they live in.

Time for a European internet, or maybe the Chinese will share with us. Let the US control the internet while Europe and the rest of the world build their own internet, free from US intervention and overlord control. Happened with GSM, is going to happen with GPS.

I have no problem with anybody building an Internet. I question whether the Chinese internet would be very 'free from intervention' given the state censorship level.

And I do not mean to bash China - I merely note that they are the government that has imposed the most internal restrictions on its citizenry with regard to the internet, and which has required the most self-censorship of external companies such as Yahoo and Google. Germany and France have done so to a lesser extent.

I am not asserting the the USA is best - I am not making a nationalistic statement at all - just noting what is reported in the news, which I believe to be factual.

I jokingly mentioned China, really, as I doubt they'll let anyone share in their internet version. Too much hassle to keep all of us in line. :)

To be honest Bill, I don't usually trust MoveOn either. But I think it is worth taking a serious look at this issue.

Could I convince you if I find another source on the topic?

I don't think this issue is about US intervention and overlord control at all- it is about business. Some internet providers in the US want to be allowed to give preferential service in internet searches to business affiliates and advertisers. There is a lot of resistance to the idea in the US.

Besides, intervention and overlord control are really more the UN style.

To be honest, there have been a lot of attempts to 'control' or 'tax' the internet since its inception. I tend towards paranoia, as everyone knows, but I learned long ago that the internet views censorship as damage and routes around it. Controlling the 'net is like trying to control sand. It just slips through your fingers.

It is the nature of governments, world wide of any political stripe, to want to regulate. That is what they do and none should be trusted %100 to look after your interests. They all need watching to some degree.

I worry even more about corporate pokery jiggery.
 
There is one point where you could turn off the internet, actualy not but you can make it unusable for the average joe.

The USA controlls the most important root servers and they can disable any or all top level domains on those servers. Then name based Mailrouting, websurfing, VoIP services etc.pp. are disabled for coutries using those TLDs.

Up to now there is a big resistance from the USA authorities to move at least one of the two A Servers to another country, obviously they want to keep the ability to disable DNS.

Hey, it's a strategic resource. I can't imagine any government would willingly give up such a resource.
