I tend towards paranoia, as everyone knows, but I learned long ago that the internet views censorship as damage and routes around it. Controlling the 'net is like trying to control sand. It just slips through your fingers.

It's driving government officials at all levels crazy that they can't get a piece of the internet pie through taxes. As sales over the internet continue to grow there will be all sorts of creative proposals to get government hands in our pockets. Until now the only thing that has stopped them is the argument that taxes now would kill the golden goose before it has fully matured.

I rarely see silly statements from you, but this is really the mother af them all: no one hates the country they live in, this is propaganda at its worst and I am surprised you fell for it, everyone wants their country to prosper and be the best possible environment for their children to thrive.
I know nothing about MoveOn of its objectives, and I can easily guess that they have different solutions than yours to problems, but even if they are wrong, yours is the kind of statement that promotes conflict over dialogue, and this is not a good think anywhere.

I doubt anyone would want to look at their internet version, 99% of the content would be censored.

That's just not true. There are many people who hate the country that they live in. I suppose it is better than hating the country other people live in, but...

I take your point, and I'll drop it. But I am not interested in dialogue with MoveOn, as I have had the lovely experience of trying to talk to people who are actually spitting on you while you speak. I have no use for MoveOn, they make me sick. I'm sorry.

You mean, the only thing that has stopped them from TRYING to control the Internet. The thing is, they can't control it. No one can. It won't be controlled. Information wants to be free.

Future digital rights management systems will take care of that, and something like the DMCA will take care of those trying to work around DMR.
And then, when you can't play CDs where and when you want, can't open the files from your digicam without the consent of the digicams maker, can't tape radio and TV and skip the ads.
Then we will all go back to music casettes, VHS, and FILM

Under no circumstance should anyone take the following seriousely. Had a bad day at work OK
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a different note....
The UK could have a go, it would have a fantastic idea that would go out to tender, that would triple its budget wilst consecutive governments (or one that changes its mind) change the requirements and set up investigation commitees to varify the last investigation into a public enquiry....... you get the drift.... then abandon it cos no one make the hardware for it to run anymore. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:
Meanwhile...
Another business in a different (any) country would then take the initial idea and make it work for a quarter of the original estimated cost and sell it to the UK  then sue the UK for infringment of copywrite
I love this country
We are good at ideas but seem to depend on anyone else to make em work. Then we pay for it..... a lot. Not getting much better either. Wembly anyone

Socrates used to say:
"no one errs voluntarily or knowingly"
And I tend to believe he was right, everyone tries to do his best for his family and his country, obviously if you are wrong you end up doing harm even if you mean well.
About people spitting at you while you try to talk to them I have known a few, idiots are everywhere, and they probably even hate you thinking that you are the gratest evil around, the problem is that if you hate tem in turn, you only end up showing that stupidity can be contagious.

I run Linux. I respect property rights, so I do not steal my music or my movies. However, once I buy my music or movie, it is mine, and I will enjoy it where and how I please. I will make as many copies of it as I please. I run Linux - we break stuff to see how it works. Then we fix it so it works better.
No industry can stop 10,000,000 motivated hackers. We're Linux - we're better than industry, we're better than governments. Freedom works because we won't put up with any less.

Well 99% of the web is porn, so who would miss it?

I can understand your point - I cannot respect MoveOn's point of view. That they believe they are seeking the best for America is beyond my ken - their 'love' looks like hatred to me. I have to go with my gut on this.

I don't hate them - I will not engage in dialogue with them. They have the absolute right to speak - I have no requirement to listen.

No, I wish I was. I've had several run-ins with them, and they were quite nasty people. I could not describe them any other way than 'filled with hatred' and got spit on (literally) when one of them saw my scowl and asked if I didn't agree that George Bush should be impeached (this was in 2004). When I said 'no' - he gobbed in my face, to the appreciative howls of his co-volunteers. While working at a MoveOn table and wearing the shirt, button, etc. ScrXX them and the horses they rode in on.
I also read their literature later on (I had already put some in my bag before I got interrupted and spat upon). Full of lies. Not just lies - real whoppers. Like lies about how bills get made into law, statements like "George Bush hates poor people and wishes they would die" that kind of stuff.
I'm not a George Bush fan - but MoveOn? I have no use for them.

Given Bill's experience I can understand why he won't have a thing to do with them.
