No this is not a camera, nor a machine gun, but an extraordinary film 2002 with Harrison Ford and Liam Nessan, about a nuclear leak accident within a highly modern Soviet submarine, during the sixties'.

What an eloquent parallel with our Soviet camera gear !

Cheers,
Ruben

The contrary, everything worked wrong from the start, fatally leading to the leak. That's the whole story of the "FSU" and our FSU gear. The dramatic side being the extraordinary human effort being castrated time and again by the beaurocratic command from above. What a waist of human resources !

Take for example that gem camera called Kiev. In a recent email exchange, Peter Hennig, a photography historian from Zeiss Historica, after asked by me why a Kiev cannot perform as smooth as a Contax, answered me that the difference lyies in the assembly line methods.

In his well known article about the Kievs history, he recalls one time after visiting the assembly lines the Politbureau decided to throw to the basket the whole monthly production. What nice a way to educate, promote and emulate.

But on the other hand, by the same token, at least regarding Soviet cameras, the bad human factor can be improved back to a fairly large extent by us, the enthusiasts from below, free living.

Like a million Kievs around...

Ruben

But there is a K-19 camera- that's the shortened name we use for the Kiev-19 at the Zenit list. The Kiev 19 (or 19M) are Ukrainian SLRs with Nikon F mount.

In "K-19", there is a scene where a Soviet fotoapparat is seen: on an ice furlough scene, the crew is playing football and one crew member emerges to take some snaps. He is shown with what looks to be a FED-1 or Zorki-1. Really hard to tell since both look alike. 😀
