OT: Leica Minilux Manual

Would anyone know how to get a roll rewound with the leader out? Do I pop the back early?

I just received mine today, and while the camera is lovely, the viewfinder sucks (I can think of nothing nicer to say).

I got a black one and it looks amazingly sleek. The design reminds me of a later Panasonic/Leica collaboration: the Lumix F7 (and later models).

I assume the problem is that the camera has a part used film in it, in a mid roll position.

The remedy is to replace the battery if it's down the press the little rewind button with the point of ballpen or coctail stick. this should rewind the film into the cassette and then you can open the back. The film should be developed, or the end fished out and reinserted into the camera. Then fire off the required number of exposures in total darkness to get the film back to the unused portion. Frame spacing may be discontinuous at the reload place on the film. I would just put a new film in instead.

It's alright John. That's handy to know. I guess i could fashion a push on cap so that I can advance the film by a couple of frames outside the darkroom. Thanks!

What I'm more keen on is taking the film out with the leader left out so it's less of a pain (I frequently misplace my film leader extractor). On cameras with manual rewind, it's just a matter of popping the back open after the resistance at the end of the roll is overcome.

Hi Justin,

I often leave the leader out when rewinding. On the Minilux it's possible because the rewind is quite slow. Just watch the counter approach 0 with your finder on the back's latch. Listen very carefully. There's a slight change of sound when the leader leaves the take up spool. Immediately unlatch the back.

Oh, and you're dead on about the viewfinder. It's the Minilux's Achilles heel. The lens on the other hand is one of the nicest there is..

Peter, I agree re: the lens. I just developed two of the five rolls I shot today, and wow. It is fantastic. I'll be publishing a mini-review for the Minilux on my website soon, and will put a copy here too.

The results are stunning. If anyone's keen, I've uploaded a couple of small samples here: http://justinlow.com/files/minilux-samples/

P.S. Managed to work the leader out thing. 🙂

I hope your Miniluxes are more reliable than mine!! I bought it new in 1996, the shutter module had already been replaced three times, it went again, and I was told by the repair people at Leitz that it was a "known"problem. I'm afraid the camera is now landfill I got so "pissed off" with the thing. You'll know when it happens, it gives the message E2 on the LCD window!! :bang: I use the lens as a magnifier!!
