OT: website advice

I'd like to develop a website, photography based, but don't know how to start and would love some advice on how to do this.

I envision a site that is similar to my photoblog but with more control. I have no experience with this other then my blog, I can't tell an RSS from a hole in the ground.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Todd

Todd, as for the galleries themselves, there are some nice programs out there that almost do all the work for you

This is one i'm trying, quite simple and clean looking. If you need more info on the site you can always add some frame with the necessary info / navigation...

I love clean looking gallery sites...

Are you going with a hosting company for the website? If so, either install yourself or look for a company that offers pre-configured tools like gallery or coppermine. You just hit install and you'll have a full blown gallery. I am still tweaking mine (and I may even get rid of it for something else), but my hosting company offers gallery, coppermine, blog tools, etc.

I put mine together from scratch with very limited knowledge of web design, "stealing" bits of HTML and JavaScript code here and there... Admittedly the layout is very basic, but at least the packaging doesn't detract from the content. I initially intended to make gradual improvements to the site layout over time but now I'm not even sure it's worth the effort. Surely if the pictures are interesting then people will be willing to put up with a primitive design....
By the way, what's an RSS?
Cheers
Vincent

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a way of publishing changes to a site. So when you update your blog, that change will be published and available to anyone that has an RSS reader subscribed to your site.

Having an RSS feed off of your blog is especially useful for people who want to know what's up. If you have a blog, you can create a feed using http://www.feedburner.com

Thanks for the tip Taffer, simpleveiwer looks clean and just right, Vincent- your site is similar to what I had in mind.

I also did mine from scratch. It is a, to painfully put it in incorrect French, un douleur dans le derriere.

That's why when I decided to put together a Photoblog and, lately, a Blog , I used Pixelpost and WordPress, respectively.

I host my own sites. I registered my own domain name(s), and used a free DNS server (there are lots) so I didn't have to pay a ridiculous price to manage my subdomain names.

If you're going to use a host, most of them (the company) can give you a whole hosting package (DNS registration, hosting, administration, etc.)

I suggest that you always look to see, if you're going to go that route (pay a hosting company), to see if they support PHP and mySQL. That alone gives you flexibility to install a lot of pre-packaged free stuff out there.

This forum, for example, is running on vBulletin (look at the footer). It's all PHP and needs mySQL (which is a database program). WordPress is a blogging software which is coded in PHP and needs mySQL. Setting it up from the get-go to something you want can be frustrating, so expect a bumpy ride.

After all that disjointed info, you may first want to define what you want to do first (see some sites; look around). You don't want to go and purchase some hosting package that gives you lots of features you don't need, or even worse, it lacks what you need or want.

Perhaps you should start there. Gather some sample URLs to see what you want, then share them here, and then we may be able to tell you what can be feasible and/or insanely sophisticated.

Chips Ahoy!

Hey Todd!

Get a domain name from Godaddy.com. You can check names for availability right there on their site. Registration on Godaddy is the cheapest I've found. They also have good prices on hosting packages. If you already have a site somewhere else, they will forward your domain name to that site for free and mask it, too if you want.
Check them out:

BTW, Godaddy is # 1 in domain name registrations.

I reommend WordPress. This is what I use for mine and I couldn't be happier. If you want something a tad simpler but still with some flexibility, my-expression.com is great too ... This is where I had my old photoblog.

I use my-expression. com too, but with my own domain name. As in my signature below.

They are a small outfit and one of the owners is usually around to give tech support. It's free for the first 30(?) days then about USD 3 a month.

The same people have also just started running ShutterSeek which is forums which seem to be exhibition focussed.
