The DE-1 will fit on the Nikon F if you take the nameplate off of the F. Same with the waist level finder, DW-2 finder, and DA-1 Action finder. The F and F2 use the same focussing screens. Some produce very slight differences in TTL metering between the two.
One repair shop customized Nikon F's to take Nikon F2 Meter prisms. They installed a battery compartment under the serial number plate and installed electrical pickups. The F2 meter heads were better than the F's, but the early F2's had some reliability problems.
Generous offer, Frank. I even have the Shoe Attachment that lets you use Nikon RF Flash units on the Nikon F. And the F2 flashes on an F3. And own an SB-7e and SB-12. And a little gizmo for that goes around the eyepiece of non-F2's to bring out the ready-light from the SB-2 and SB-7e. That crazy Nikon! Compatibility like that can only be explained by the engineers being potty trained too early.

I think this depends on the finder. The metered finders don't interchange. However, my F eyelevel finder fits onto my F2 with no problem. I think this depends on the finder. The metered finders don't interchange. However, my F eyelevel finder fits onto my F2 with no problem. I may have read somewhere, too long ago to remember precisely, that mounting an F2 eyelevel onto an F required removing that small metal plate with the Nikon logo which is held on by two screws on the top front center of the camera. It says on the CameraQuest website that F2 finders can be used on an F if you take off the "Nikon" nameplate that sticks up in front of the finder bay. It's held on by only two screws and could easily be re-added later.
From looking at my F, this appears correct, but I don't have any F2 finders against which to check it.

Since wer talking Nikon F does anyone have a prism (meterless) for one (or a parts camera). Mine has a broken prism and I'd like to get it back in service. Looks are un important as long as it works. 🙂 Thanks....

I'm sorry, I'm afraid I was confusing the DE-1 and DP-1 finders. The DP-1 isn't interchangable without a lot of work on the camera to deal with the differing battery locations. Thanks to those who corrected me.

Grizz: What Finder do you have now? The eyelevel prisms tend to be expensive. You could probably get a non-functioning metered finder and transplant the glass.

Brian, I'll verify when I get home tonight but I'm pretty sure it's the photomic Tn. Not only does it not work it is falling apart. It's missing some screws and is pretty much shot. You are correct I could use any prism, meter or not. I have seen that the meterless ones go for a pretty penny on ebay and was hoping for a less expensive beater. Other than that any prism that works with a dead meter would put me back in business. thanks for the reply....Grizzz
