Hi everyone,
While this might not be the most appropriate forum to ask about digicams, this is the only photo site that I frequent so ...
Does anyone know of a camera like the Ricoh GR-D (fastish fixed lens, good controls, reasonable pixel count, compact, etc.) with a 35mm equiv FoV? Basically, the digital equivalent of a Olympus Stylus Epic. Does such a thing exist? I know that Olympus has made a series of digital Stylus cameras, but they all have zoom lenses and stupid digicam controls.
Any help would be appricated!

Sigma is getting to release one with a fixed-focal length lens.

Yeah, I've heard about the Sigma but it doesn't really fit the bill. It's still 28mm FoV and the lens is slow. Thanks for the heads up though.

Fuji F30, 6MP, f2.8 at 35 (gets slower as it zooms), great film like noise/grain up to 3200.

I'm waiting for that sigma DP1 for sure. I carefully compared a full res image from from the Sigma SD10 with one from the Nikon D200, and the resolution is about equal, though the SD10 is notably sharper and the image itself looks more film-like.
I figure the latest generation X3 sensor will be a true winner, and the DP1 will squash all other non-SLR digitals on the market. 28mm fixed? Yay. I love wide angle. I'd rather have a fixed 28mm than any other fixed focal length.
Sigma! Hurry it up! Quick, before Canon comes out with something to block!

Meh. I hate the huge-screen-tiny-buttons-plastic-wedge trend for p&s cameras (or rather p.o.s in most cases), and the sigma looks like it's not much different.
If they had really designed it for photographers, they would have left some space on the back for your hand to go. Gripping a camera with your fingertips doesn't exactly lead to stability, and when you're shooting what a compact camera is meant for, you don't need a huge screen to chimp at.
That said, if the DP1 does churn out good images and doesn't have any major flaws, I might think about one... I'd get an optical view finder of course, and try to forget the lcd existed.

I really hope the DP1 does materialise, and when it does so, that it has an accessory shoe that allows an external finder to be fitted..
Pictures shown so far have not given me much hope though..

No no, ballistic rubber. Especially when it has shutter lag, making you miss the sot and turns you ballistic.

I'm interested in the DP1 as well. I like the idea of another manufacturer picking up on the fixed focal length idea-- especially pairing the 28mm-equivalent focal length with a large sensor. I'm not as excited about the proposed f4 maximum aperture, but hopefully the sensor will be good enough at high ISO sensitivities to offset that somewhat. In any event, it wouldn't hamper my shooting much.
