So, I updated an image only to find out that by replacing the picture with a new version of the same photo (added some contrast) all the comments and the view count were erased and now the pictures says its "not accepting comments at this time."

Okay...didn't mean to do that :(

I apologize to those of you who posted comments on the image before, did not meant to erase them...

Very nice image!. It makes sense that comments were erased. Replacing an image for a new version essentially makes it a new image and previous commenters wouldn't necessarily have the same things to say about it. E.g. it could be that comments of the earlier version were that the contrast could be improved... ;)

I agree to certain extent...What if someone makes a suggestion (crop, color,, contrast, etc.). Every time you experiment with an adjustment you'll lose the conversation behind the picture's evolution (though in this case it was a very minor adjustment). I think a better way to handle it would be for the poster to make a note or comment that they made an adjustment instead of losing the views and comments.

That said, good point, and thank you for the comment on the picture.

You should just post a new picture, so the old version stays as it was with all comments. So all users still can see both versions and decide, if they like one better than the other. If you modify anything, it is not the same version that has gotten the comments. So for me it seems perfectly logical that the old comment are gone if the picture [the exact same file in this case] that got these comments is gone. Just my $0.02.

I got caught the same way.. and regretted losing the history of comments. About accepting new comments, try adding the picture to one of your collections. I think that resolves it.

Perhaps then for future "victims" a note could be added that states that you'll lose all your comments and views.

That said, everyone has made good points on this. I'll take that course of action in the future. I just posted an image that I had accidentally exported as a 8-bit file which caused banding. Now I'll add the 16-bit file in addition so I don't run into this problem (here's the "before" 8-bit which I'll duplicate later http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/showphoto.php?photoid=214915)

(still feels weird adding duplicates for mistakes like that).
