Our Germany 2016 Trip (SWC, M9, iPhone 6)

I will post some photos here from our recent trip to Germany. I have so far uploaded to my smugmug account photos taken with the iPhone, and I will next work on changing RAW images from the M9 to jpg before posting any here. I still ned to get two rolls of 220 film developed and scanned that I got from my SWC.

It was raining for many days as we were in Germany, and in fact there were cases of flooding all over Europe then, which discouraged me from taking more photos than I already have taken there. I was almost always walking with my family in some street, and I took snapshots of things around us. We stay away from tourist attractions, and we just enjoy the different cultures. Dana and Lina enjoyed daily (multiple) visit to some Gelato outlets.

I drove by car from Berlin to Nuremberg to Wetzlar to Bonn and then back to Berlin.


Nuremberg (or, Nuernberg, in German) is a lovely city with a rich old city portion.

Here are some snapshots that I took in Nuremberg with the iPhone. I was able to use the iPhone easier when it was raining, and it rained during many days then. I had the phone in my pocket, and when needed, I just pulled out the phone and took some photos. It seems that many people in Germany frown upon street photography (no need to get deep into this here), so using a phone made things easier for me.

Every time I go to Germany I spend time in Nuremberg. I love the place! You've photographed some of my favorite areas in the downtown area (the castle, Frauenkirche and the farmers market, the Durer's museum neighborhood). If there's a next time, try the Trödelmarkt (although you seem to have been there, it's near the executioner's home) and the students dorm nearby. Also, the area at the end of Karolinenstrasse, where there's a tower called Weisserturm (also a metro station) has a lot of potential.

And yes, Germans seem a bit wary about people with cameras, but they use iPhones a lot (like in the rest of the world). However, you still may get away by hyperfocusing your Leica glass.

One of my past graduate students lives in Nuremberg, so ha gave us a Royal Tour, so to speak. We were at the Troedelmarkt, I think. I recall the executioner's home.

After Wetzlar, we drove to Bonn, where I spent about seven years of my boyhood years. I met up with two good old friends from middle school after not seeing them for close to fifty years. I searched for them online, and I found them.

We visited my former elementary school and also my middle school in Bonn, with a side trip to the main outlet store for Haribo gummy bears. The "bo" in Haribo stands for Bonn. Lina and Dana chose this place as one of their "must see" places, of courses.

This is where we used to live in Bonn many years ago:

My old middle school Niculaus Cusanus Gymnasium. Our Vice Principal is the widow of one of the Grafs who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Our school was quite special.

My old elementary school used to be called Matthias Claudius Volksschule (now, it is called Michael Schule). Catholic and Protestant public schools used to be separate. There are only Grades 1-4. If you didn't do well in the main subjects, you were sent to Volksschule (or schools that did not lead to regular university studies; more vocational in nature). I did well, so I went on to a Gymnasium.

It was an amazing trip back to old times when I was very young. I bought some Gelato in downtown at some Italian parlor, and I asked the young man who served us the Gelato how old the parlor was. He told me "over eighty years", so I told him that I had bought many times ice cream there fifty years ago.
