can this be accomplished without disassembling the camera?
Nope--the top has to come off.

Seems like a good price to me.
Well, it's a good job at least one person thinks it was a reasonable price, as it was me what bought it!

Must be catching this lust thing. I'd had a seed of an idea of buying a Canon RF to go with my Canon LTM 50mm 1.4. I could never make my mind up which one I should go for until I started to read this thread. I did a search onlne and found myself offering £125 and winning a Canon P wthin about five minutes. So now I sit here waiting excitedly for the post.
I thought I had this GAS thing under control but clearly not.

If it's in good condition, you got a good deal! Congrats.

I've discussed about this with my repair person and I'm planning to have it done next time my P will be serviced. He says the top plate must be removed first but it's not a difficult task.
Some people here installed blue tinted filter on their Nikon SP VFs. Blue is complementary colour for yellow (colour of the Canon P brightlines) so in a way it makes sense that blue tint would enhance VF contrast. I'd like to hear your opinions about this.
Theory dictates Cobalt Violet as the opposite of Yellow, assuming it’s a Cadmium type yellow, so it could be worth experimenting a bit.

Good idea--please let us know how it turns out when you get it done. The dim (from age) yellow/ gold RF patch is THE Achilles heel of the P. My L1 does not suffer from that ailment.

Mine just arrived and is in very good condition apart from a few marks on the top plate I assume from a meter. The rf patch is OK but I'll if there's a way of making it better I might give it a go.

If that was the one in Britain on eBay with the make offer option, I had it bookmarked...ended up getting mine from KEH here in the states, but that looked like a fine specimen. Enjoy. I'm glad the P is still affordable.
Mine should be waiting for me when I get home from work today--will report!
BTW, Yammerman, I love Wales. My wife's family is from Cardiff...we spent our tenth anniversary at Portmeirion. Sadly, before I owned a decent camera.
I'm interested in buying one of these with a 50mm lens if anyone wants to sell me one in the USA.

Yeah mabel that was the one it called to me and I didn't have the will to resist. I'm one of those pesky invaders from England. Having holidayed and been educated here it was great that we got move here 10 years ago - the deal is they get my son. Portmerion is a very interesting place and we have a house full of its pottery. Glad you got a P in the end or I might have felt bad.

When we were at Portmeirion, it was pretty much 95% working class Brits on holiday and 5% Americans obsessed with The Prisoner (ie., us). My wife was shocked that all the young people speak Welsh now--last time she'd lived there they were just beginning to make it compulsory in school, and she spoke it better than a lot of natives. It's really very cool how it's returned! She said their Welsh was so slangy she didn't understand it anymore...

Who knows what effect "The Prisoner" had on my young mind. The only Welsh I know is Dim Parkio but my son is learning. More independence is coming and Cardiff is verging on cool. Hey we even have Dr Who.
Already shot 10 frames of Hp5 with the P so if it'd just stop raining(that ain't changed) I can finish the roll and see some images.

"Flim? You want flim?"
Well, it's a good job at least one person thinks it was a reasonable price, as it was me what bought it!I saw this one, it looked in superb shape for USD 300 with 1.8/50, and in a moment of 'P lust' as you called it (well, actually I've been considering this model for a year), I bought it via BIN. I wasn't going to muck about in the narrow range the seller had set between opening bid and BIN price, and risk losing the thing in an effort to save USD 5 or 10. (I'll forgo a few pints to compensate.) Now I eagerly await its arrival. Let lens lust begin!

Looks great, indeed, but "No Return?" That makes me think. I'd still bid, since the guy has a 100% approval rating, but ... makes one think. I'm just saying.

Agreed on the "No return" and the "as is" accompanying it! It did make me think, but then I proceeded anyway! I've admittedly taken a bit of a leap of faith there. I shall report when it arrives...

Welp, just got mine from KEH. Looks and feels great! A few curved scratches on the top plate--somebody obviously used to have the swiveling version of the meter. VF is clear and bright, alignment's good, all speeds appear on the money. This one has the serrated advance lever, unlike my previoius one...nice touch, very M2. The "wrinkled" curtain is barely wrinkled at all, and the accessory meter is in working order. Plus the BGN 50/1.4 is super clean.
I'm gonna load it up with Neopan 1600 and shoot a reception at work tomorrow...what a pleasure!

Hmmm... I've been thinking of selling my almost wrink free P as I have a new arrival (M4-P) in the house but you keep persuading me to keep it.

OK, here it is! It's actually a little more worn than it looks here, but it still looks pretty damned good. I have discovered it's very inconvenient to have a large soft release on a P, as it makes it very difficult to switch into rewind mode. In fact I screwed up a third of a roll because of this, don't ask....

A couple of images from the first roll with this combo...most were underexposed but that was my fault, not the P's...I didn't bother metering and just relied on wild guesses. Neopan 1600 has more latitude, even at 1600, than you might expect. These are from last night's literary reading at Cornell...
