I visited Kanto Camera Service last weekend and was rightfully "scolded" for not realising that I should paint the inner regions of the SNHOO copy [1] that I use for a Summitar on my Leica IIIf. This is, of course, done properly on the original from Wetzlar [2] that has eluded me and many others for years.

Right, so off I went to the store to buy some paint and ended up in the hobby section. What followed was a lot of confusion and not many recommendations since I did not intend to paint a plastic figurine. Thus, I turn to you, what recommendations would you have when it comes to the paint for a piece of aluminium that goes, for me, scarily close to the precious optics?

I have never done any work on any camera equipment before, apart from some very light sensor cleaning, so this would be my first do-it-yourself project. In my childhood I painted Warhammer figures, badly though, but I believe I can get the paint where it is supposed to be as long as I can select the right kind of matte black paint for the job.

For mine, I just used some cheap matt black spray paint purchased at Tokyu Hands (the branch just near Kawasaki Station actually). I first cleaned the adapter with alcohol to remove any oil etc. from the metal surface, then masked off the areas I didn't want to get paint on with masking tape, and then applied a few light squirts of paint while moving in a circle around the adapter (or maybe I rotated the adapter instead... can't remember now). The finish is not perfect, but good enough for me. And I have a heap of paint left if I every want to touch up the finish.

With the UV filter and hood in place, looks pretty good to me.

Thank you for all the information and the pictures. The friendliness off the members here at RFF really moves me.

About the project, I picked up the supplies from Tokyu Hands in Shinjuku yesterday and got right at it. Being the complete clutz that I am, I probably used too much paint and dissolved the primer that was recommended to me by the salesperson at Tokyu Hands. This lead to the paint not "sticking" properly and results being rather poor. No worries though, at least now I will have a good enough reason to try again and get less bad at this.

Thank you again and sorry for being useless, at least for now, when it comes to paint.
