Pan F - tests

I am off today, and figured it would be a good day to test my new slow speed combo. These were with the Arista branded Pan F rated at iso 50, in Rodinal 1+50.

I felt like shooting with an SLR today, so my apologies to those who are sensitive to this kind of thing, but the post really is about the film. Lens was the Canon 50/1.2 L FD.

Not bad for $11.69 per 100 ft roll.
 
Very, very nice tonal range. That is what a B&W film should do; make one want to take photos of household objects just to bask in the glow of the tones.

Thanks for sharing. I'll have to try this film and developer combo.
 
Looks great! (Lucky for me, I got 400' in the freezer) For how long did you soup it?

That lamp shot is really good except maybe for the curtain in the window...
 
Once again proving that almost any combo of film and developer can give great results when handled properly from beginning to end. Bravo, very nice.

It's Ilford Pan F 50
 
Nigel: Pan F+ is an Ilford product, so if it's not available in the UK, something is definitely amiss. :D

The Arista version is simply private labelling for Freestyle Sales, located in Los Angeles. Currently they are selling outdated 100ft bulk rolls at a very good price.

Nigel, Arista is the house brand of Freestyle Photo. This was Arista Pro 50, which is rebranded Ilford Pan F. They still have outdated bulk rolls on clearance here.

EmilGil, I just followed the recommendation on the massive development chart: 11min at 20C.
 
As I've mentioned earlier (still no connection), these guys are good to deal with, and they have plenty in stock so if you contact them you can easily get pretty good bulk deals. Film might be expired, but to my experience not by much.

Nigel - try sevendayshop.com. They have loads of PanF (as well as every other film) and they sell it for £1.89 per roll.
 
Ray, these are excellent photos, I like the abundant tonality and the beautiful light.

While we are at PanF, has anybody else also the feeling that this is one film where irrespectively on whether you succeed in nailing the exposure, it benefits greatly from good, contrasty light? I finished a roll just the other day under dull (UK) light and it seemed to me the photos lacked bite.
 
Very Nice Ray! I like the combination of F1.2 lenses, Pan F film, and Rodinal.

I stocked up, picking up twelve rolls of the outdated 100' Freestyle Pan F, now in my new deep freeze.

It'll last nearly forever as long as it's kept frozen.

Have 100 rolls of outdated 120 Pan F, same deal.
 
Ray, I like these too. Good examples of what the film can do when treated properly. A test well worth the time I'd say...
 
Alkis: My long-ago experience was that the film could build up highlights quite quickly if the exposure isn't nailed, and depending on developer. I think under dull conditions it may have needed a bit more energetic developer, i.e. Rodinal 1+25 instead of 1+50, D76/ID-11 straight, etc. Others will chime in, I'm sure. My last foray was DDX 1-4, which looked quite nice.
 
I love Pan F, so here I am :) I bought a bulk roll of Pan F last weekend since my old one is almost gone. Didn't know about Freestyle deal, since $80CA I paid at Henry's (tax included) looks as a rip off for me.

Alkis: I think Pan F is a very good film for uneven light cause it has a wide latitude. Not the film benefits from it but a photographer who have chosen PanF for contrasty light... I had a great success with Pan F on overcast days though lighting was contrasty - inside a tram, train station etc. I'd think Tri-X or APX is more appropriate for dull light; or processing could be more contrasty as mentioned before.
