We ARE waiting to see if anyone with a 4990, 4180, or 4490 is planning on posting. I think we have people with those scanners.

I have the 4870. I can scan those if you want, but I dont really have time to crop and resize them.
Personally I never use the 4870 over 1200 dpi, and there is nothing extra above 2400 dpi.
Let me know

I have the negs and an Epson 4990. But I've been buried - my wife was away this weekend and I had the two boys to myself - karate, soccer, school reports, crafts projects. Man am I beat! But I will get to this - you just need to be a bit patient.

that's fine. Don't bother.
I DO, on the other hand, want to see Robert Budding do his thing with the 4990.

I'll be patient.
We'll all be patient.
That will finish the test, I think.
Wait. . . no. . . ONE more scanner after that : Epson V750.

We're all light!
Third? I'm pretty sure it's the second (and last) version; I have the first, which I bought a few months after its release.tammons said:George,
Please note.
Its a Howtek 4500. There was more than one 4000 dpi howtek.
Also the minolta is actually a 5400II the third iteration of the 5400.

Corrected and thanks. I saw mention somewhere of a 5400 and a 5400I so I thought there were 3 versions. At any rate the II is the last version.

There were no corrections on the finescan files. All were straight from the scanner. For those interested the finescan 5000 is $25,000. The big advantage of the finescan is the very large 13x18 inch film size x-y scanning with 4 top quality lenses and true 3.9 dynamic range. It's very easy to scan with but the color editing software has a major learning curve. No question the drum beats it but is much slower to use.
Full scans will come when I have time to color calibrate the scanner. It takes about thirty minutes to do a full res and color calibration.

Please, anyone tell me if you did your own development - I need to know this for the site. People are asking.
I had mine developed in the generally standard D76. The rest are pretty much standard whatever you do.

Thats why i think its best t do a pass around test, and just use one packet of film so everybody is scanning the same film strips.
The test does look good though. Definitely shows how soft the 4870 is.

I'm sanning now with my Epson 4990 and Silverfast. How do you want me to send the files, George? I'v saved both Tifs and large jpegs (60MB and 8 MB).

OH, if you could just post full frames that are 490pxl on the shortest side, and take crops at 100% as seen on my website, that would be great.

yeah, I agree - hence the original title of this thread. But, people had issues with that, so we didn't.

I am late, and not done, but this is a start. Pacific Image 3650u with Digital Ice for about $250 new. The color negative did not scan well, the B&W a bit better, the slide was the best of the three. Of course all in-scanner filters (Digital Ice included) were turned off. Oh, the max resolution is 3600 dpi.

I was hoping that someone with a Nikon Coolscan 9000 would join in. Any takers? I'll mail you my negs.

I just looked at the scans on George's site - the film scanners pull out a lot more shadow detail than did my Epson. I guess I'll save my pennies and buy a Nikon Coolscan 9000.
